Stretch and Stilettos: Exercises that will help you maintain balance while walking in heels

It’s no secret that we all absolutely love our sneakers and comfortable slip-ons. But every now and then there is a desperate calling from the corners of our closet – by the heels, we once bought on sale! A good pair of heels can indeed change the entire look of your outfit and make you feel like you’re walking on a vouge ramp, even if you’re just out for groceries!

Marilyn Monroe rightly said, “Give a girl the right shoes, and she can conquer the world,” I am sure that she was talking about heels. With that being said, walking in heels can have you begging for a foot rub due to the pain and discomfort associated with them. Not only this walking with grace and maintaining a balance is a task for many of us! But then again knowing the correct way to walk in heels is a good skill in your repertoire for a who-knows-when dressier occasion.

Lucky for you, we have assembled a few exercises to help you train your body to balance better and walk like a runway model the next time you strap in your heels!

Calf raises

Wearing heels for a long time can give a hard time to your ankles and cause severe ankle pain. To bid adieu to the pain, you need to strengthen your calf muscles, and this exercise is just the thing you need! All you need to do is stand with your toes on a step and ensure that your heels do not touch the ground. Then, slowly lower your heels towards the floor and hold a deep stretch before pushing through the toes to lift yourself into a calf raise. Repeat this a few times and perform the exercise in bare feet to get the best results.

Rotate your ankles

This is by far one of the easiest exercises to get that grace and stature while you walk with heels. Just Rotate the foot in a complete circle and make sure to flex and extend the toes as well as the ankle. It helps to restore mobility and improves strength within tight ankles and feet.

Walk barefoot

Walking barefoot helps restore the natural way of walking and strengthens the foot. Try walking barefoot in Parks, gardens, or beaches as our natural surroundings offer ample opportunity to stretch our toes out and get in a foot workout.

Achilles stretches

Lunge forward while holding onto a wall. Keep the front leg bent and straighten the back leg. Make sure that the heel of your back leg touches the floor. Hold the position for 5 seconds and voila you have successfully stretched it out! This exercise helps stretch the calf muscle, which gets very stiff due to our sedentary lifestyle and lack of exercise.

Foot Stretch

This exercise requires you to kneel and keep a rolled-up towel under your feet. You have to sit your hips back onto your heels until you feel a pull in your ankles. This helps to stretch the muscles of your feet and also opens up the tops of your feet so they look lovely in high heels.
