Pilates or Yoga? Which One to Choose?

Pilates and yoga are both scientifically designed exercise programs that are very effective. However, if one has to choose between the two the choice would have to be yoga. Grand Master Akshar tells you why.

This is because yoga is a holistic science and an ancient form of traditional wellness. Yoga is a beautiful combination of various techniques and methods that impact different aspects of our being. Yoga contains postures that mould and shape the body bringing strength, flexibility, and stamina along with improved health in all the ways to the physical body.

For all ages

There are about 84 lakh postures to choose from that are suited for all levels of practitioners ranging from age 5 onwards all the way up to even an 80-year-old individual can practice. While the practice of Pilates mainly focuses on fitness aspects; yoga through breath, meditation, mudras, chanting etc. offers holistic well being and overall development of the body, mind, and spirit.

Spiritual Development

A very important aspect of yoga is that it leads to spiritual development which in turn allows the consciousness to evolve. This encourages confidence, self-reliance and makes a person resilient in the face of challenges. Yoga has the power to align a person with his purpose. It balances his/her energies; it enhances his or her potential and allows the person to connect with oneself. Through this mindfulness, yoga builds a deep connection with the self which is what allows us to become strong positive and confident.

System Regulation

The practice of yoga through yoga asanas, and breathing techniques regulate all the different systems in the body including the nervous system, circulatory system, digestive system, and cardiovascular system et cetera. Unlike Pilates, yoga not only takes care of the outer appearance of the body by making you look toned and fit but it also cleanses and massages your internal organs for improved functioning and overall health. Moreover, all this is possible through yoga without the help of any equipment or machines. All you need to practice yoga is a simple yoga mat which can be carried with you anywhere and can be done at your convenience at any time.
