GlobalSpa gets in conversation with Dr. Noopur Jain, Founder and MD Dermatologist at SkinZest, Delhi and Gurgaon.
One of the most prolific and well-known dermatologists in Delhi region, Dr. Noopur Jain is credited with bringing aesthetic dermatology, eyebrow microblading, injectables for face sculpting, anti-ageing procedures, lasers, and hair loss therapies as well as Dermafrac advanced facials and non-surgical facelifts to Gurgaon and Saket. Her extensive experience lies in treating not only common skin issues, but also rare and complicated dermatological diseases.
Having recently expanded her horizons with her state-of-the-art skin clinic SkinZest now in South Delhi, we got in candid conversation with the expert…
1.) Starting off, how did your journey with dermatology begin? How did you know this would be your calling?
While doing an internship post-MBBS, we were posted in the Dermatology department for one month. To see the kind of difference treatments of skin ailments can make to the patient’s quality of life is what encouraged me to delve deeper into the field. As I started reading more and more about the skin problems and how they affect one’s social and mental health, I realized this is what I wanted to pursue. The kind of research and updates in technology that are happening in the dermatology and aesthetics field is something which excites me even today.
2.) Spanning years of experience, what are some challenges you have had to face throughout your journey?
Coming from a family of businessmen and no medical background, it was challenging initially to convince my parents that I want to pursue medicine as a career. Moreover, since there wasn’t any doctor in the immediate family and no pre-existing practice that I could join, I had to start my practice from scratch. Another big challenge was to create a motivated and loyal team as no business can run without teamwork. Being a female, it was difficult to make people take me seriously. Sometimes even family members would take my work and dedication lightly, thinking that I am doing this only as a hobby. But with time, they have understood my passion and commitment to my work.
Gathering finances was another challenge which I faced initially as most of the machines required to build a dermatology practice are fairly expensive. A huge learning gap and limitation exists for doctors as we aren’t given any training on how to run a successful business. We are great at our technical skills and knowledge but when it comes to managing practice, especially for private practitioners, we are completely handicapped.
3.) You are renowned for introducing new and innovative treatments to the Indian industry, especially in the NCR region. Could you share with us your decision process behind it?
One of the reasons I enjoy my work is because bringing in new treatments and new technology for helping my patients is a huge driving force for me. I enjoy learning about new treatments and procedures and introducing them in my practice. The decision to bring in any innovative and new treatments is taken after a lot of research, trials and demos. Only once I am fully convinced that the treatment would add value to my patients and my practice, I introduce it at our centers.
4.) What are some trends that you soon see emerging in the aesthetics industry?
We are living in a very exciting time as far as skin treatments are concerned. Dermatology practice has completely transformed in the last ten years. A lot of things that were taught to us during residence have become completely outdated whereas new technologies are coming in every day. Some of the new trends that are emerging are: integration of Artificial Intelligence into the dermatology practice, teledermatology, use of home skin assessment tools, newer cosmeceutical molecules being introduced, move towards preventive skin care rather than curative, etc.
5.) Any word of advice for aspiring dermatologists in the industry today?
Have a clear vision in your mind and stay true to it. Don’t follow trends blindly, and do what is ethical and right for your patients. Always take out time to read and research about emerging treatments and technologies. Treat your patients with empathy. Building a successful practice requires a lot of patience, dedication and hard work. There are no shortcuts.
6.) Lastly, what is your beauty philosophy?
There is no perfect definition of beauty. God has created us all as unique individuals and all aesthetic treatments need to respect that. Treatments shouldn’t aim at making every individual into set standards, but they should aim at making everyone look the best possible versions of themselves.
Lastly, external skin treatments will show results only if you are internally at peace. Work on yourself from the outside and on the inside to feel and look beautiful inside out. Hence my favorite quote -“Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder and the beholder should only be you”.
