A Neurological disaster: What is the beauty parlour syndrome and how to prevent it

Would you believe that a relaxing salon day, can turn into one of the worst possible nightmares? For a woman in Hyderabad, her recent trip to the salon turned extremely fatal when she started feeling dizzy and suffered a stroke, during her “perfect hair-care day”.

This incident left the internet to come up with a plethora of, rather uncanny explanations as to what caused it. The woman was soon rushed to the hospital, where it came to light that she had a stroke! But what was the catalyst?

The doctor who was handling the case conducted an MRI scan and revealed that it was due to a neurological condition in which a key vessel supplying blood to the brain was pressed during a possible massage or treatment at the salon. The question that underlies is, can a simple massage or hair wash leave you with a scary numerological condition? And should you be worried about it? Let’s break it down for you and put an end to all the conundrums, circulating the internet.

So, what’s the beauty parlour syndrome?

When the head is inclined and pressed back in a certain way, for the hair wash, the arteries, that supply blood to the brain and spine are blocked and hence manifest into dizziness, nausea, and vomiting, which can further lead to a serious condition known as Vertebrobasilar insufficiency, or popularly coined as – the beauty parlour syndrome.

The blockage around the artery, can also build up either due to a harsh neck massage or pouring cold water suddenly on the head. Moreover, you also need to make sure you have a regular exercise routine, a balanced diet and follow a healthy lifestyle to avoid any blockage in your arteries.

While you are in the middle of a hair wash and your head is inclined in a certain way for a prolonged time, the underlying conditions of an unhealthy lifestyle, trigger the plaque, and cause a disruption in the blood supply, leading to a stroke.

Should I cancel my visits to the salon?

Absolutely not! We wouldn’t want that for you! However, there are some preventive measures you can keep in mind if you want to get rid of that scare.

You are what you eat, and you sure do not want to be a storehouse of junk! So, first things first, the most important preventive measure is to eat right. You need to load your body with plenty of vitamins, minerals, and nutrients that will help your body in times of distress. Apart from that, make sure you maintain a fit and healthy lifestyle. Your body should be trained to handle strain and pressure if and when required because you might never know what underlying condition you have!

If you are uncomfortable, inclining your head or the temperature of the water does not suit you, ask your beautician or the salon expert to make changes, because a salon should be the last place you need to be scared of for fighting for your life!
