Dermatologists agree retinol is a god amongst skincare products. Check the pros – it’s good for almost everything and anything. Anti-ageing, dark spots, blemishes. All of that. Think it’s too good to be true? Well, researchers might think so too.

In recent times, industries dealing with cosmetics have come up with a solution of products which can be used for reversing and preventing signs of ageing. One of them proven by a dermatologist as a result of its effectiveness is known as retinol. It is a form of Vitamin A which can be used to treat acne and as a skincare product for reducing wrinkles.

THE UNDERLYING PROBLEM WITH RETINOL

It is evident that you start losing collagen, which is found in the face from the age of twenty years and above. Every year you lose at least 1-1.7. Retinol makes your face undoubtedly more harmful than good to your skin if overused.

The more often you apply retinol into your skin, the more you get new cells to multiply. This further prevents the excess skin from shedding off, which is not right. It also encourages basal cell in the lower skin to divide and rise into the skin surface, hence promote and epidermal cells increase. The more these cells multiply, you end up depleting healthy, useful cells for your body.

If retinol is overused, these new skin cells stop to function. This is as a result of overproduction. Hence the cells become excess, and the adhesion hinders proper skin functioning. The more you continue applying retinol in your skin, you reduce exposure to environmental factors. This barrier is unnecessary to your skin as it can lead to negative impacts such as increased sensitivity, irritation, flaking and in some cases peeling off.

One of the other consequence of overused retinol is that your skin is highly sensitive and impacted by UV Ray’s of the sunlight. Therefore, whenever you are using retinol, you are highly recommended to use sunscreen lotion on top of your moisturiser to prevent damages.

Unfortunately, people are combining different compounds to make retinol. This can be alarming if at all, they do not have the knowledge and more information when it comes to balancing and sensitiveness. It’s chaotic that you can find yourself using the wrong retinol and cause more harm than good to your skin.
