Celebrating the Doyenne: Sargam Dhawan Bhayana

“For most of history, Anonymous was a woman.” ~ Virginia Woolf. On this International Women’s Day, GlobalSpa recognizes and celebrates the women in the industry as we delve into their success mantra they follow, mistakes that have helped them grow, and of course, their WELLNESS philosophy.

Sargam Dhawan Bhayana is the woman who has introduced international brands like DAFNI, Makeup Eraser, and stylPro in India and has also launched Paul Penders in India through her ecommerce platforms- Tressmart.com glowmartindia.com

What is your wellness philosophy?

I personally follow a regimen that keeps me completely focused, productive, and motivated throughout in order to maintain the finest possible level of well-being.

Together with regularly grooming myself, I make sure to moisturize and nourish my skin. I schedule my self-care and gym appointments a few weeks in advance to maintain a healthy work-life balance. Given the fast-paced lifestyle, I also make an effort to limit my use of screens. Our eyes are stressed by the blue light from the screen, and we can feel and experience physical and mental stress from what we see on them. It can be calming to close your eyes for a few minutes.

Your success mantra?

For me, success isn't a quick fix, it's all about perseverance. Giving up is not an option. If my approach to achieving my goal doesn't yield results, I step back, reassess with a fresh perspective, and make the necessary adjustments. Seeking guidance from those who have more expertise than me is also essential. I am of the opinion that this openness helps to expand oneself. Thereafter, learning from others and continuously expanding my knowledge is vital. I firmly believe that running a business requires both hard work and creativity. My dad always reminds me to keep learning and staying updated in my field. The key is to keep pushing forward!

A lesson you learned from making a mistake?

When I first started doing things, I was so excited that I jumped right in without making a proper plan. This caused me to fail sometimes and I had to start over, which made me frustrated. However, as I have matured and grown in experience, I have come to recognize the importance of engaging in the disciplined practice of methodical planning, taking the time to sit down, meticulously map out every detail, collaborating with my team, and then thoroughly examining and reexamining the plan until it has been finely honed to perfection. I've learned that it's better to take my time and plan things out properly than to rush into things and mess up. Two things I keep in mind now are: "Proper planning and preparation prevent poor performance." and "If you fail to plan, you plan to fail."

Any piece of advice for all the women out there?

As a piece of advice to all the young and enthusiastic women, as a leader in the beauty industry, I suggest keeping things simple. It's easy to fall into the trap of trying out every new trend that hits the market, but this can quickly become overwhelming for your skin and your wallet. By focusing on the basics, you can save time, money, and give your skin the chance to breathe. Taking good care of your skin doesn't always mean using an array of products. Sometimes, a simple routine that works for you can be just as effective in giving you that healthy, radiant glow. So, don't be afraid to pare things down and stick to what works best for you.

What has been your biggest pride as a doyenne?

The journey of building my business hasn't been easy, but it has been thrilling. Despite the challenges, there have been numerous moments where I felt a sense of pride. Being recognized as a 'doyenne' today is undoubtedly one of my proudest achievements. Winning awards and earning the respect of those who once dismissed me has been immensely gratifying. While it's hard to pinpoint one particular moment, I take immense pride in my work promoting "ethical beauty" and ensuring that all the ingredients we use are responsibly sourced. My brands prioritize social and environmental impact, reflecting values that are very dear to me.

In 2021, amidst the Covid-19 pandemic, we launched the ViRa Project to give back to society. The initiative involved counseling those who lost loved ones to the pandemic, assisting those who were left jobless, and supporting pet rehabilitation. Although it was an emotional roller coaster, the sense of accomplishment and fulfillment the project brought made it all worthwhile. For me, ViRa is one of my proudest endeavors, and I feel humbled and honored to have been able to make a positive impact in people's lives during such a trying time.
