Celebrating the Doyenne: Nina Lekhi

“For most of history, Anonymous was a woman.” ~ Virginia Woolf. On this International Women’s Day, GlobalSpa recognizes and celebrates the women in the industry as we delve into their success mantra they follow, mistakes that have helped them grow, and of course, their WELLNESS philosophy.

Nina Lekhi is the MD and Chief Design Curator of Baggit – one of the leading fashion accessory brands in the country.

What is your wellness philosophy?

“Work like a captain and party like a pirate” – I work like crazy and incessantly and then I wind down or party in full swing! When I dive into things, I go deep into them whether it’s work or a workout! The fun in fitness is quite paradoxical. You run, exercise harder, and then do yoga and stretches- the pleasure you derive from the pain of running is what defines my wellness philosophy!

Your success mantra?

Whatever you do, do it 100% – things you like doing and even the ones you don’t! The reason we don’t like doing certain things is because it’s not our forte and our mind is not wired to do it. But once we decide to do it and get a hold over it, we automatically start enjoying it. Success is about making it successful.

A lesson you learned from making a mistake?

Too many KRAs and reports would excite neither me nor my team and sometimes would bog
us down. The lesson I learnt was to do it the way we do it at home with our kids. Make the toughest of the things fun and enjoyable. It’s something that I’m still learning- to make work
not feel like work!

Any piece of advice for all the women out there?

It might seem tough to make your mark in business and entrepreneurship which is known to be a man’s world. But it’s all in our head. If we believe we can do it, we surely can. If you still feel there are certain shortcomings in terms of skills or acumen, create a vision book for yourself. Rewire and reframe yourself to what you want to be. The universe is yours and you’ll attract what you think and believe you are. So create what you want to be and believe in it. It will definitely be yours.

What has been your biggest pride as a doyenne?

Creating Baggit is what I’m amazed and proud about because it started just as a passion. The only thing I put through was my enthusiasm and the love I had for what I was doing, also the ethics I believed in and stuck on to for good, bad or ugly. When I look back and see that what just started as a footloose hobby has today become a huge business that’s empowering and providing employment to so many people. I want to thank the Lord for all the blessings.
