Celebrating the Doyenne: Anshita Mehrotra

“For most of history, Anonymous was a woman.” ~ Virginia Woolf. On this International Women’s Day, GlobalSpa recognizes and celebrates the women in the industry as we delve into their success mantra they follow, mistakes that have helped them grow, and of course, their WELLNESS philosophy.

Anshita Mehrotra is the Founder of Fix My Curls, a curly hair brand made in India which helps you embrace your natural curls.

What is your wellness philosophy?

My wellness philosophy centers around the belief that taking care of oneself extends beyond just physical health and skin. It’s moreover the way your life makes you feel every day when you wake up! It is intrinsically knowing that you can change your life in small ways that will make you happier. As the founder of Fix My Curls, my wellness philosophy is closely tied to hair care and the importance of taking care of your hair texture and type the way it deserves. I believe that every individual deserves to feel confident and beautiful in their own skin, and that includes having healthy, well-maintained hair.

Curly hair care is a niche segment that has often been overlooked by haircare experts in India, with few brands catering to this specific hair type. As a result, I created Fix My Curls, a community-led brand that provides start to end solutions for all types of textured hair, including curly, wavy, or coily hair. I am passionate about helping individuals embrace their natural hair texture and empowering them with the knowledge and tools to care for their curls in the best way possible.

For me, Fix My Curls is more than just a business venture; it is a conviction to change the hair care industry in India. Through my brand, I hope to promote inclusivity and diversity in beauty standards and inspire individuals to embrace their unique traits confidently, by providing holistic solutions for hair care.

Your success mantra?

My success mantra is centered around making sure you’re passionate about whatever it is that you want to do. There will always be days where things will be incredibly difficult, but knowing your fundamentals will push you through those days with ease because you’ll know you’re following your passion! Nobody will ever love your work, or your day-to-day routine as much as you yourself will, so make sure you like the 10 hours a day you spend doing something enough. I once read that you have to do the 1% that the 99% of people aren’t doing to stand out and find success, and I think consistency is that 1%.

At Fix My Curls, we focus on creating protein and moisture-rich products that enhance curl and wave patterns without weighing them down. We do not use sulfates, silicones, parabens, or mineral oils/waxes in our products. This focus on natural ingredients has helped us build a loyal community of like-minded people who want to embrace the texture they naturally have.

My success mantra is centered around building a community-centric brand that caters to the needs of our target audience. By creating products that work for their specific hair type and by engaging with them through conversation and education, we are changing the hair care industry in India. I am passionate about this mission, and my consistent conviction to make a difference is what drives my success.

A lesson you learned from making a mistake?

I’ve learned that you have to take delegation very seriously. I used to think I could do everything on my own, feeling like trusting people would lead me astray, but I was wrong! I made this mistake time and time again and felt burnt out, until I tried delegating and genuinely trusting my team. I saw the difference. It improved who I was as a leader, a person, and a friend to my employees by trusting them the way they deserved, and of course it made us more productive!

Any piece of advice for all the women out there?

Your gut feeling is right. Sit with the feeling, understand it, and then go and make the hard choice! A lot of the times, as women we’re told we’re too ‘emotional’, and that we can’t make logically backed decisions, this of course isn’t true, and more often than not, your gut led decisions turn out to be the best ones, and especially when your gut, as a woman, is telling you to leave a situation. I think our emotional intelligence is a big big advantage that can take us much further in our careers and lives than we think, don’t underestimate it!

What has been your biggest pride as a doyenne?

My biggest moment of ‘I’ve somewhat made it’ was probably when we realized we grew 5x from 2021 to 2022, and that the space grew so rapidly, I remember being stopped in a cafe and being recognised by a fellow curly girl, it was such a proud moment.

Our audience has grown with us, as much as we felt out of place in the D2C space as one of the few brands selling such a niche prospect, our customers too had to come out of their shells, try something new and have faith in who we were asking them to be (which is purely themselves)!
