Celebrating the Doyenne: Akshita Gandhi

“For most of history, Anonymous was a woman.” ~ Virginia Woolf. On this International Women’s Day, GlobalSpa recognizes and celebrates the women in the industry as we delve into their success mantra they follow, mistakes that have helped them grow, and of course, their WELLNESS philosophy.

Akshita Gandhi is an International Artist & a Philanthropist. By merging social, historical, and mythological concepts her work explores the relationship between time and space.

What is your wellness philosophy?

In a world where social media and brands are constantly feeding you with what to do and not to do, my mantra is “keep it simple.” In our fast paced chaotic lives, I believe we need to feed and nourish our mind, body, heart and soul because without all four realms being in harmony, complete wellness is impossible. A good night’s sleep, a simple home cooked meal, a book that fuels your intellect, meditation or any exercise that centers you and surrounding yourself with positive people is my wellness philosophy.

Your success mantra?

I learned my success mantra from my father. He once said, “if they write your obituary, rise like a phoenix,” that stayed with me and irrespective of anyone who says or does, I’m relentless in my pursuit and a go-getter, ensuring I make the best use of my time. Of course we all have good and bad days but if you have a strong sense of discipline then success is possible.

A lesson you learned from making a mistake?

I don’t think I’ve looked at anything I’ve done as a mistake. Many lessons however. Everyday I’m a new person and am constantly learning from my day to day life – making notes and introspecting what I can do better.

Any piece of advice for all the women out there?

We live in a patriarchal society and are made to believe we are caregivers first with responsibilities of our families. Most ambitious women with successful careers are looked down upon sometimes. The truth is you lose some you gain some. Chase your dreams, break out of conformity, be yourself and no matter how hard it is, don’t wake up thirty years from now regretting how you gave something up because a man said so and made decisions for your life. There’s nothing more beautiful than an independent, self reliant woman who is whole within herself and then settles with a partner who brings value to that.

What has been your biggest pride as a doyenne?

My biggest pride has been to showcase an ancient Indian art form (Varli) at the UN Chamber of Music Concert, New York. To have a known collector in New York purchase a piece that she believed would help her husband overcome depression and it helped him tremendously and every single art therapy session I’ve hosted. The love and kindness I’ve received through it has been unmatched. Using my art to make a difference in someone’s life has been extraordinary.
