Time to ‘Salve’ our Skin Problems

COVID-19 has successfully reversed the whole perspective on beauty and made it inside out. Aishwarya Sawarna Nir, Founder of Global Beauty Secrets, tells us exactly how.

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected the world in ways more than we can perceive presently, with our past perceptions about the world we live in, is itself being challenged. One of the profound lifestyle changes that we have been subjected to perhaps is simply …confinement with our own selves. The quarantine has not just been a time of physical confinement in our homes but also a time of mental confinement. It has been both a good thing and a bad thing because we finally have space to ourselves, yet in that space, we do not really know how to effectively utilize that time with ourselves.

One of the most important challenges being that, is of self-care. Most of us have been heavily dependent on the beauty salons or beauty supplies for taking care of our grooming needs, however, the quarantine has led us to reflect more deeply on this process of grooming. Whom are we grooming ourselves for? Because there’s no more urgent meeting to attend, or date or weekend trip, etc. We cannot go to the beauty salons or the spas because they are shut. Why are we grooming ourselves? The negative voices of beauty standards thus imposed by society have finally become loud enough as various voices coaxing us into looking a certain way rather than feeling a certain way.

Thus, our whole perspective towards beauty has changed. You look good for yourself, you arrange for that to happen by yourself, and you feel good because of yourself. It is, therefore, an excellent time to love yourself and your body. You can use these precious few moments to nourish it with some homemade goodness like DIY face masks, body scrubs, and salves!

I am sharing with you a few of my favorite recipes that you can try in the comfort of your home.

Mango Body Scrub

Mango is super rich in Vitamin A which helps with the shedding of dead skin cells, it also, therefore, makes for an excellent ingredient in a scrub. You can mash a ripe mango, add some coarse yet fine granules of sugar, with some olive oil or clarified butter. Mix it all together so that the paste acquires the consistency of a scrub, then massage your body all over starting from legs to hands to the neck, etc. then jump into a shower and wash it all off.

Ghee Salve

Take a copper plate and a copper tumbler with a flat bottom, add some 3 tablespoons of ghee into the plate with few drops of water, now using the flat bottom rotate the ghee approx. 100 times into the copper plate, release any excess water, then add a few more droplets, repeat this process approx. 25-30 times, till you get a fluffy creamy consistency of the ghee. Use this salve on your face or any dry patches on your body and watch it do wonders for you.

Oriental Hair Rinse

Collect the water you cook your white rice in and let it ferment for a day or two. Rinse your hair with the fermented water after shampooing or cleansing your scalp thoroughly. This water is rich in nutrients that work wonders for your hair health. It nourishes your scalp, strengthens your hair follicles, does away with dandruff, keeps your hair frizz-free. It is a top hair secret of the women in Mongolia and China.
