SWITZERLAND

Ranked with the highest EPI (87.42), Switzerland stays at the top amongst sustainability. While the country naturally flourishes with lakes, forests, and mountains, Switzerland has made some major efforts towards preserving water quality, wastewater management, as well as utilizing wind energy. Currently, there are approximately 900 wastewater treatment plants across Switzerland. The Swiss are also a leader in waste management with a recycling rate of 53%.

SWEDEN

Sweden’s been prioritizing sustainability for a long time now, and so are the efforts paying off. With an EPI of 80.51, the country made the biggest difference by introducing district heating – essentially central heating but rather for towns and cities. Gothenburg alone heats 90% of apartment blocks and about 12,000 standalone homes. MALTA

A surprise for most people, Malta undeniably lists itself as one of the most sustainable destinations in the world, mostly because of the Maltese government’s strict orders regrading sustainability. The country uses natural gas as its primary fuel – 70% of energy coming from natural gas and the rest from renewable sources. Malta also ranks no.1 in water quality.

FRANCE

The French are adored for two things most out of all – their food and their fashion, and that’s exactly where they introduce sustainability the most. Named one of the most sustainable food countries in the world, France fights food waste by requiring supermarkets to send leftover food towards charities instead of throwing them away. The country’s also banned retailers from throwing out unsold clothes and instead donate to organizations. Use of sustainable energy and water conservation are other aspects of eco-friendly France tourism.

IRELAND

With an EPI of 78.77, Ireland ensures being eco-friendly by promoting measures for fresh air and water and conserving its natural foliage of mountains and forests. High quality of life, low rate of crimes and an overall safer place makes Ireland a must-visit on your sustainable destination list.

UNITED KINGDOM

As buzzing as it is, United Kingdom in 2018 scored an EPI of 79.89! In fact, two of the most popular British cities – London and Edinburgh have been listed amongst the top sustainable cities in the world. They’ve shifted towards using more of renewable resources such as solar energy, as well as onshore and offshore wind energy means. With over 3000 parks and more than 8 million trees in London alone, United Kingdom effortlessly takes the spot for a green visit.
