Celebrating the Doyenne: Rashmi Parekh

“For most of history, Anonymous was a woman.” ~ Virginia Woolf. On this International Women’s Day, GlobalSpa recognizes and celebrates the women in the industry as we delve into their success mantra they follow, mistakes that have helped them grow, and of course, their WELLNESS philosophy.

Rashmi Parekh is a debutante poetess and the author of the book ‘Inscape Lost Words Found’.

What is your wellness philosophy?

Mind, body and soul – you need to nurture all three.

I had written a short poem which perfectly expresses my philosophy:

“Open up your eyes and see,

A universe of infinite possibility.

Our sight isn’t just one – but all three,

The eye and The mind and The heart,

Together in synchrony.”

Your success mantra?

1. Self-belief

2. Compassion

3. Be accepting and open to getting advice but don’t get bogged down by it

4. Never be too proud to acknowledge your mistakes and learn from them

A lesson you learned from making a mistake?

Making a mistake is human. What separates the grain from the chaff is your attitude and reaction to it. Pick up the pieces and forge on. There is no point in wallowing in self-pity – you are only doing a disservice to yourself! The first hurdle is to let go of your stubborn pride and acknowledge that you did make a mistake. After which, you need to understand what you can learn from it so that you can avoid making the same mistake again.

Any piece of advice for all the women out there?

You are your most ardent cheerleader. Unless you believe that your voice needs to be heard, you will not find many who will be willing to listen! There is also a tendency of women to dumb themselves down in order to not come across as overly assertive. Don’t do it! It is absolutely possible to get your opinions heard without fearing confrontation.

What has been your biggest pride as a doyenne?

The noun “doyenne” has two synonyms. One is “an older person” or “a senior”, and the other is “ an expert”. I do not believe I am either! I refuse to be dictated to by my age! It’s just a number after all. I consider it more as years of experience!

As far as an expert is concerned, I would love to get there at some point, but I think there is so much I still need to learn and explore.
