Isha Borah On The Importance of Representation In The Fashion Industry

By Radhika Agrawal

We live in a time where social media has a greater impact on everyday fashion trends than runway shows. Fashion is no longer accessible only through glossy magazines and industry events—it’s all over our Instagram feed. Brands, stylists, and content creators are constantly influencing how we dress by setting new trends, sharing styling tips, and creating a community of like minded people. But with so many people putting out content from the comfort of their homes, it can be hard to stand out.

Isha Borah, a fashion content creator born in Assam, has managed to carve out a niche for herself on social media in a relatively short span of time. Best known for her ‘Get Ready With Me’ (GRWM) reels, she places the spotlight on homegrown sustainable brands in her videos. On the occasion of International Women’s Day, we sat down with her to have a candid chat about her Instagram journey, importance of representation in fashion, and more.

GlobalSpa: When did you start curating content and how did the idea come to you?

Isha Borah: It all started during the Covid-19 lockdown. Like countless others, I too lost my job. It was at that time that I made my Instagram profile public and started creating content for a larger audience. I was always into fashion, so when the uncertain phase happened, creating fashion-related content proved to be quite cathartic and calming. That’s where my journey as a creator started from, and I still have a long way to go.

GlobalSpa: Tell us about the highs and lows of your journey so far. What are some achievements you’re proud of and challenges you’ve had to overcome?

Isha Borah: The immense amount of love that I have received from my Instagram family is one of my biggest achievements. It is what drives me and inspires me to keep pushing for greater excellence and finesse. As for the lows, I do have days when my creativity stalls. When that happens, I ensure that I take a break and rest.

GlobalSpa: According to you, how important is representation in the fashion industry?

Isha Borah: I believe the representation of factors like race, ethnicity, colour, and gender are crucial in the fashion industry in order to bring them to the forefront. When such causes are shown sensibly through fashion, it pushes the narratives forward by introducing them to a larger audience.

GlobalSpa: What would your advice be to aspiring content creators and stylists from underrepresented states of India?

Isha Borah: I don’t believe there is any correlation between achieving success on social media and being from an underrepresented state. There are so many successful content creators in India who started their journey from scratch, coming from the remotest places in the country.

My advice would be to never stop trying, irrespective of where you are from. It may take some time, but you move a step closer to your dream with every day of trying. Give yourself some rest when you’re exhausted, but don’t stop trying.

GlobalSpa: What do you do in your downtime?

Isha Borah: I watch TV series and movies on OTT platforms. I also love cooking, so I do that too. Sometimes, I head to the beach or just visit the lovely parks and shopping centers.

GlobalSpa: What is your wellness philosophy?

Isha Borah: There are a few of them. I believe in facing my battles one day at a time. I also think it’s important to get enough rest and sleep well so as to not burn out. And lastly, health is wealth—so don’t take it for granted.
