Good Vibes Only! How to Follow Vastu for A Positive Home

What’s the best way to bring positive vibes into your home? Our homes should be places we love, where we enjoy waking up and coming back home to. If you want to breathe more life into your living space by creating a happy, healthy and welcoming environment, then there’s no better place to start than with the principles of Vastu.

To the uninitiated, Vastu is the ancient Indian spatial laws to create better living spaces. At the beginning Vastu can feel a little esoteric, but if you take the time to dig into the philosophy behind it, you’ll find that it’s not only based on simple practices that make our homes healthier and more organized, but it also reveals how connected we are to our homes, and in turn, how they can affect our mood and well-being.

“If someone asks me to define Vastu, I will say, Vastu is the Indian practice of trying to create balance with the natural world in our interior spaces. It uses energy forces to create harmony between an individual and their environment”, says Vastu Acharya Manoj Srivastava, the only Vastu Consultant in the world with more than 20 years of Corporate leadership experience.

In this article Vastu Acharya Manoj Srivastava shares few very practical and actionable tips to invite positive vibes into your home:

The Main door is the energy mouth of the house

The main door of a house is the entry point for prana energy. A door that opens outward pushes energy away from home. So, have the main door opening clockwise and towards the house. Opportunities may be limited, if the door does not open fully. It is also important that the main door is well decorated. There should not be an electrical pole, transformer or pillar facing the main door. Dead plants near the main door should be removed to ensure positive prana force to enter the house.

The hallway accumulates the prana

The hallway is the space which connects the main door with the rest of the house. It is specifically found in apartments and even in properly designed independent houses. The role of hallway is to accumulate the prana energy and distribute it to the whole house. Ensure that it is well lit and clutter free. Do not let footwear scatter in the hallway and keep them in a closed cabinet or rack. You can put some indoor plants to enhance the accumulation and distribution of energy.

Remove negative symbolisms from your home

We are continuously bombarded by symbols all around us be it on television ads, outdoor advertisements, movies, newspapers we see a lot of symbols. These symbols are sublime messages which directly work on our sub-conscious mind. At home, the décor, artefacts, figurines, and paintings act from their symbolisms into our mind. In our homes, it’s enhanced even more, because we are creating these intimate environments that inadvertently represent our fears and challenges. The trick is to be aware, contemplate and evaluate what challenges you are facing in life, and try to identify whether they’re symbolically showing up in your space. Remove the symbols, and replace them with items you want to attract. Some of the examples of negative symbols which can be found in Indian homes – A painting of a lonely woman, or a figurine showing a lion and ox fighting or pictures depicting voodoos or dark practices, a painting depicting sea-storm, war, etc.

Balance the kitchen energies

The kitchen is a vital space as its energy represents nourishment and relationship harmony for the occupants. Ensure that you don’t place the sink and stove next to each other as that can lead to arguments between couples, as it creates a water and fire clash. The colours in the kitchen are also an important consideration – avoid too much black and red as that also causes a fire and water clash. Does your kitchen already have the stove and sink next to each other? Do not worry. Place a wooden element between the two. It can be a wooden partition painted green or an indoor plant. The presence of green between sink and kitchen stove will reduce the clash between the two elements.

Choose the right colours for the home

Choosing the right colour scheme for your living room is one of the ways to ensure positive vibes in the home. When choosing the colour scheme, it is essential that your choice reflects the five vastu elements – Water, Air, Fire, Earth and Space. Each element has its associated direction. For example, North and North East is water element, South East and South is Fire, South West is Earth and West is Space. Blue is the colour for Water, Red, purple, violet and pink are colours of South East. Yellow and beige are colours of earth. You would ideally need an energy map of your home to decide the colours, however, that will require a consultation with a Vastu consultant. Till that time, you can follow the above pointers.
