What Works Best: Comedogenic or Non-Comedogenic?

There are many skincare product terms that you may have come across. Taking the time to understand these products and how they work is essential.  Getting the right info on these terms also ensures that you are always on the look before making a purchase.

COMEDOGENIC

Comedogenic products are the ones that promote the clogging of skin pores with debris and sebum. These clogging and blockage lead to blackheads, pimples, and whiteheads. Acne tends to form when there is too much production of bacteria and sebum.

NON-COMEDOGENIC

These are products that do not promote the clogging of skin pores with debris and sebum or acne production. However, as much as this is the case, they may not be able to prevent acne.  These experts recommend these products to patients who have skin that is either acne-prone or oily.

COMEDOGENIC INGREDIENTS

It is rather difficult for experts and dermatologists to classify these ingredients. These experts find it difficult because what may end up clogging your skin may not do the same to another person. However, there are those ingredients that are more acne-prone compared to others.

If your skin is prone to acne, below are some of the ingredients you should avoid.

  • Cocoa Butter
  • Pigments & Dyes (red in particular)
  • Coal Tar
  • Isopropyl Myristate

INGREDIENTS TO AVOID IF YOU HAVE OILY OR ACNE-PRONE SKIN

Even if a product claims to be non-comedogenic, have a look at the label.  Avoid greasy ingredients like:

  • Olive
  • Avocado
  • Jojoba
  • Shea
  • Artificial colours
  • Tar
  • Lanolin

Regardless of whether a product is indicated to be comedogenic or non-comedogenic, always shop smart. Instead of taking any product you come across, do your research to know what works best for you.
