How to Deal with an Itchy Scalp

Just like our hair and skin require specific care, our scalp equally requires sufficient attention and maintenance. Monisha Bhatia, Head of Education at Kerastase explain how to ail an itchy scalp and maintain hair health. Every day, our hair and scalp are exposed to harmful environmental aggressions. Pollution, coupled with dirt, grime and water impurities coat the hair and settle on the scalp. As a result, our hair becomes coarse and brittle, while the scalp feels clogged, dirty and itchy.  Your hair and scalp care routine is also a big contributor to the health of your scalp. Beautiful hair begins with a healthy scalp and thus it’s imperative to focus on scalp care. Our scalp is an extension of our skin and houses 1,50,000 follicles. Poor scalp health has visible signs, including the build-up, flaking and irritation. Over time, an unhealthy scalp can weaken and damage hair follicles which can lead to breakage, thinning and hair fall. WHAT IS THE SOLUTION? Just as one uses specific products to address different skin concerns, so too should one use specific targeted solutions to remedy scalp issues. It is therefore key to identify the cause of an itchy scalp. A well-trained professional expert at a salon is best suited to diagnose your concerns and recommend what will work for you. One of the most important aspects of maintaining a healthy scalp is the balance in moisture levels. If your scalp is oily, it is advisable to use a cleansing shampoo and lightweight conditioner. For a dry scalp, you should use a hydrating shampoo and conditioner. To eliminate any buildup of dirt, oil and product, it is recommended to use a clarifying shampoo every week, depending on the health of your scalp and hair. One must also make regular appointments in-salon for treatments specific to your hair and scalp concern.   Disclaimer: This article is authored by Monisha Bhatia, Head of Education, Kerastase.
