Do’s and Don’ts Of An At-Home Hair Colour

At-home hair colour can be a little tricky if you are a rookie but it’s a great way to save some money and have more control over your look.

Schwarzkopf India shares some easy do’s and don’ts to help you ace the hair makeover.

FIRST, THE DO’S

Research, research, research:

There are many different at-home hair colour products on the market, so make sure you choose the one that’s right for you. Whether you want to choose something with 0% silicone, ammonia, PPD and PTDs or go for anti-breakage and OmegaPlex technology, there’s a hair colour option for everyone. My personal favourites are the Simply Color and Colour Specialist ranges from Schwarzkopf.

Patch test:

Before you apply the colour to your entire head, it’s important to do a patch test to make sure you don’t have any adverse reactions to the product. Simply apply a small amount of the colour to a hidden area of your hair, such as behind your ear, and wait 24 hours to see if any irritation occurs.

Follow instructions:

At-home hair colour can be tricky, so it’s important to read and follow the instructions carefully. This will help you achieve the best possible results and avoid any mistakes.

Protect your clothing:

Do protect your clothing! Hair colour can stain, so make sure you wear old clothing and put on a cape or towel to protect your clothes. You can also apply petroleum jelly to your hairline and ears to prevent staining.

After-care treatment (a repair masque/conditioner) :

The colouration saga must always end with an after-care treatment. An immediate application of a repair masque post rinsing the hair ensures additional moisture and nourishment is granted to the mane.

NOW, THE DON’TS

Going extremely light / dark shade:

It’s best to stick to a shade that’s similar to your natural colour. Trying to go too light or too dark can turn out dissatisfying so it’s best to play it safe.

Leaving the colour for too long:

Most at-home hair colour kits come with a timer, so make sure you follow the recommended processing time to avoid damaging your hair. Leaving the colour on for too long can result in dry, brittle hair.

Using an old hair colour:

Just like with any other beauty product, hair colour has a shelf life. If you have an old box of hair colour sitting in your bathroom, it’s best to toss it and buy a new one. Using old hair colour can result in uneven or unpredictable results. In conclusion, at-home hair colour can be a fun and cost-effective way to change your look.

Just make sure you do your research, follow the instructions, and avoid the don’ts to achieve gorgeous results. Happy colouring!
