To enhance your hair growth, you need to know what kind of hair you have and to know that each and every hair type has its own way of care. According to Ayurveda, the characteristics of your hair is determined by three factors called doshas. The three doshas namely Vata, Pitta and Kapha, govern everything in your body from hair type to skin type to illness and health.

People who have a Vata dominance in their body have dry and frizzy hair, with a proneness to split ends. Those with Pitta dominance in their body have moderately thick and wavy hair that is prone to hair fall. And people with Kapha dominant bodies have thick, lustrous and curly hair with greasy scalp.

According to Ayurvedic hair experts, Pitta dosha is responsible for the metabolism of the hair follicles. When Pitta dosha is out of balance it can cause hair loss by overheating the hair follicles. Pitta imbalance causes inflammation in different parts of the hair which eventually results in thinning of hair.

5 Step Ayurvedic Hair Routine

Indian hair is appreciated for its quality, presentability and texture, and the secret behind that is our ancient, wholesome, Ayurvedic hair care routine.

Step 1: Hair Oil

The golden rule Ayurveda prescribes for healthy hair growth is generous and frequent oiling of your hair with herb-infused, coconut, or sesame oil. Ayurveda says that hair should never be left dry as the body is always generating excess heat. This excess heat is released through the scalp. Thus, the hair is constantly subjected to internal heat, which if not cooled down with relevant oil massages, can make your hair brittle and cause hairfall.

Hair oiling should be done at least 4-5 times a week and leave it on for at least an hour or until you wash it off. Coat your hair entirely with oil, but do not leave it overnight make sure to wash it off after a few hours. When done this way the hair is prevented from getting dry.

Shirodhara: in this Ayurvedic method of hair growth, warm oils infused with Ayurvedic herbs are poured on the forehead in oscillating motion from a container hung above. This is an immensely soothing method that balances the Vata and Pitta doshas in the body. This procedure not only helps in reducing hair loss and enhancing hair growth but it also reduces stress, induces sleep and improves blood circulation in your body.

Shiro Abhyanga: This process warm medicated oils are poured on the area of action and massaged by putting pressure on the pressure points. A proper head massage with Ayurvedic oils ensures nutrient supply to your hair follicles.

Step 2: Hair Wash

The second step to cleansing and maintaining your hair according to Ayurveda for healthy growth is to use the right combination of herbs to wash your hair. A natural Ayurvedic hair wash have many different kind of herbs to perform different functions like releasing excess heat, gently removing excess oil and dirt, restoring the acid content of hair and most importantly improving hair growth while taking care of the scalp.

Ayurvedic Herbs That Are Good Hair Cleansers: Shikakai (Soap Pod), Reetha (Soap Nut), Triphala (Haritaki+Bibhitaki+Amalaki), Kumari (Aloe vera), Amla (Indian Gooseberry), Japa (Hibiscus), Methi (Fenugreek), Nimba(Neem), etc.

Ayurvedic Herbs for Hair Regrowth:

a. Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri)

b. Bhringraj (Eclipta Prostrata or Eclipta Alba)

c. Kumari (Aloe Vera)

d. Ashwagandha (Indian Ginseng)

e. Japa (Hibiscus)

f. Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)

Step 3: Hair Mask

The third part of an efficient Ayurvedic routine for hair growth in applying Lepa or hair mask on a fortnightly basis. An Ayurvedic hair lepa is formulated to deep clean the fine follicles of the scalp. The hair mask helps unclog the hair follicles that get jammed due to excess sebum collection. It also releases dead cells and debris and prepares the scalp to receive nourishment better in the form of hair oils.

The hair mask should be used once a week or atleast once in 15 days. This is especially useful when there is strong persistent fungal dandruff, slow impaired hair growth due to bad weather, water quality, and illness.

Shiro Lepa: This is an Ayurvedic hair mask where different herbs in dry powdered form are mixed into a fine paste. After applying this paste thoroughly, your scalp is covered with banana leaf, leaving the top portion of the scalp from where the medicated oil is poured. This pacifies the Pitta dosha and is extremely beneficial in treating premature hair fall and dandruff.

You can use Ayurvedic herbal powders like Amalaki, henna, fenugreek and solvents like egg white, aloe vera gel, etc. to prepare your nutrient rich hair masks. Apply the mask from your roots to hair tips and leave it for about 30-40 minutes before washing it off with water.

Step 4: Trimming

Often people think that if they do not cut their hair then they will end up with long lustrous hair, this is an incorrect statement. Broken hair with split ends gives a thin and rough look to your hair tips. You can avoid this by getting rid of split ends through regular trimming. Ensure you eliminate your split ends by trimming your hair every 8-12 weeks.

Step 5: Avoid Harsh Chemicals

Using harsh chemicals for styling or washing your hair, may change your scalp’s pH while they can strip off the natural oils from your scalp and protein layers from your hair that helps in hair growth. Switch to Ayurvedic products with natural herbal ingredients to attain holistic hair health without unwanted risks.

Daily, Weekly & Monthly Hair Care Routine As Per Ayurveda
