Haircare Rituals to Never Skip During Summers

Once warm weather rolls around, you know what that means: heat, humidity, and even more moisture! It's the time to modify your hair-care routine to get through the season with a balanced and lucent mane of hair. Saumya Ahuja, Mikami India, tells you how.

The hot temperatures of warmer months trigger scalp dehydration, making your locks more susceptible to breakage. Increased exposure to the sun may negatively affect your hair's natural defence! As per various research findings, 36 hours of exposure to the sun weakens the cell lines of the hair follicle, causing it to fall out.

Summers can be harsh on your scalp, causing it to dry out and even harm the roots of your hair. Prolonged sun exposure and dust in the warm weather exacerbate hair problems such as flaky scalp, split ends, frizziness, and hair loss.

Your hair too can become sunburned and lose its natural colour! If you are incessantly out in the sun, even coloured hair starts to fade. Hence, in the summer, natural hair reigns supreme! Now is the time to ditch the perfect, sleek hairstyles in favour of a more relaxed, natural look.

By using the following natural, chemical-free methods and easy hacks, you can keep your hair happy and healthy all summer long and flaunt it like a queen.

1.) Minimise washing

Frequent cleaning depletes your scalp's essential oils, which triggers additional production of oil and leaves you feeling the need to shampoo it far more frequently. Begin plain rinsing in the shower after a day to see if that removes any excess oil production.

2.) Consistent conditioning

After washing, smoothen, de-frizz, and moisturise your locks with coconut oil, apple cider vinegar or shea butter. The oil will add shine and, if you have wavy hair, will help you achieve natural, air-dried curls. Once a week, try a natural deep conditioning treatment to add moisture to your hair.

3.) Regular oiling

Coconut, almond, and neem oils well penetrate the hair follicle. Shampoo your hair as usual, then apply oil from the endpoints to the roots. Gently exfoliate, then condition as customary. After this, your hair should feel moisturised but not stringy.

4.) Replace brushes with wide tooth comb

When your hair is wet, resist dragging anything through it because it is more prone to cracking. Brushes could indeed pull and start ripping hair when they snag strands, so wide-tooth combs are by far the most gentle way to untangle it.

5.) Avoid heating tools

Try to blow-dry your tresses far less than possible. In the summer, it is already subjected to a significant amount of heat frequently, and it will most likely air-dry quickly anyway, so give the blow dryer a cut and go natural if possible. Flat irons should be avoided as well, as they will cause additional damage to already dry hair. Furthermore, a sleek hairstyle draws attention to the frizz!

6.) Cover it up

When you're out in the sun, cover your head with a scarf or hat. This will not only provide additional shielding but also aid the retention of moisture in your hair follicles. A hat lessens wind damage, particularly if your hair is highly susceptible to tangling, and it protects colour-treated hair too.

Modifying and customising your hair-care regime is essential to cater to your hair issues from season to season. A little effort goes a long way! Picking up a simple scarf while you’re on the go, can help save your hair from the scorching sun. Slapping on some naturally sourced leave-in hair conditioner can keep the frizz in check and may even stop you from reaching out to a dreadful hair straightener. Now you know how to mollycoddle those tresses all through the summer!
