Different seasons require different dietary requirements. Summer seasons makes you lethargic and dehydrates your body quickly. Here’s a guide from Rinki Kumari, Chief Dietitian, Fortis Hospital Bangalore, about the seven Summer superfoods that will help you keep hydrated and fit.
During the Summer season, it is imperative to see to it that your food intake contains sufficient water content, helps you in protecting and beating certain health issues which is common during the summers and have control over your sugar intake.
1) Pineapple:
Though extremely sweet, a cup of pineapple chunk contains just 82 calories—which makes it a great food for the summer. As a fruit pineapple contains vitamin-C and manganese, which help in the immune system of a body. Consuming this fruit also helps in digestion, protection of eye which tends to reduce its power as you age and helps in reducing blood clots.
2) Beetroot:
This vegetable is high in fibre. Best way to consume this vegetable is in the form of juice. Beetroot juice helps you in giving better physical performance and increases stamina of your body. It helps you in maintaining your weight. Beetroot contains phytonutrients such as pigment of betacyanin which are anti-inflammatory agents’ helping in defending birth defects and preventing a type of cancer called as colon cancer.
3) Blueberries:
Not being in mood due to the summer heat is common. Blueberries help you in amplifying your mood and increase in cognitive function. They contain anthocyanins which are anti-oxidants and helps in combating cancer cells.Blueberries contain vitamin-K and are called the King of anti-oxidant foods. They prevent cholesterol and thus reduce the risk of heart related diseases.
4) Watermelon:
Rich in water (contains 92% water); watermelon is the perfect fruit for your dehydrated body during the summer. With vitamin-A and vitamin-C, watermelon helps you in boosting the immune system and protecting your eyes and has lower calories than pineapple with 46 calories per cup. Containing anti-oxidant, it helps in preventing cell damage.
5) Tomato:
Whether it being a vegetable or a fruit is debatable, but what isn’t debatable is tomatoes are a great summer food for your consumption. More the tomatoes are red the better. It contains an antioxidant called lycopene which gives protection from UV-rays. It helps you in fighting heart-related diseases and stroke and also prevents memory loss.
6) Grapes:
It contains vitamin-C and manganese which helps a great deal in improved cognitive ability and regulate your blood pressure. It also helps you in preventing certain types of cancer and slowing the growth of tumour in colon, stomach and breast. Risk of constipation is reduced because of water and fibre present in grapes.
7) Coconut Water:
There’s no doubt that drinking water at all times is necessary but it becomes extremely important during the summers. For some, drinking water may bore you due to its taste but a great alternative for that would be coconut water which is tastier and helps in rejuvenating. It has its health benefits too. Reduces blood pressure and fights against kidney stones and has anti-oxidant properties.
