Your Ultimate Guide to Pre and Post Workout Skincare

By Amrit Kaur

Going for a run or hitting the gym to pump some iron? While we’re glad that you’re taking care of your body, it’s equally vital to care for your skin—both before and after your workout. As it turns out, the post workout glow is not a myth. On the one hand, exercising can improve your blood circulation and leave you with a natural glow. On the other, it can also trigger breakouts if you don't maintain a proper skincare regimen. Sweat and dirt can clog pores during a workout, leading to acne and blackheads. Following a dedicated skincare routine before and after your workout, however, can help you protect your skin. Not sure where to start? We’ve created a comprehensive guide for you to follow.

Pre-Workout Skincare Guide

    1.) Remove your makeup

Before you start sweating it out, it’s critical you take off your makeup. The likelihood of breakouts increases when makeup is coupled with sweat and grime. If you’re wearing heavy waterproof makeup, feel free to use a dissolving balm or an oil-based remover for the best results.

    2.) Cleanse your face

Use a mild cleanser to get rid of any last traces of makeup on your skin. You can even spray on a mist to hydrate your skin afterwards.

    3.) Apply a moisturiser

Choose a solution that dissolves into your skin quickly after application and is lightweight. This will ensure you don’t feel weighed down while you’re working out.

    4.) Wear your SPF

Wearing sunscreen is a must, especially if you’re going to be exercising in the outdoors. Choose a solution with SPF 50+ for best results.

Post-Workout Skincare Guide

1.) Change out of your workout attire

Staying in tight workout clothes keeps the sweat and moisture from your workout session trapped inside, which can lead to breakouts on your body.

    2.) Cleanse and exfoliate

Yes, you have to do it again. Use an active-based cleanser to get rid of all the sweat, oil, and dirt particles. You can take out the big guns for this one—use a cleanser with salicylic or glycolic acid to gently exfoliate your skin as well.

    3.) Take a shower

Even if you don’t sweat heavily, it’s imperative that you wash your entire body to get rid of dirt, oil, and of course, odour. You can use an antibacterial body wash to get rid of any and all bacteria. Pro tip: choose a cold shower instead of a warm bath.

    4.) Apply a gentle serum

Once you’re done drying yourself, apply a soothing and hydrating serum on your face. Opt for ingredients that’ll help calm the skin down and leave it with a healthy glow.

    5.) Moisturise and protect

Warm showers can remove the natural oils from your skin, leaving it feeling a dry and dehydrated. If you’re not a fan of cold showers, make sure you make up for it by moisturising your skin thoroughly. You should also reapply sunscreen if you’re planning on stepping out.
