This is How you Explore Germany’s Greenest City in 24 hours

In collaboration with German National Tourist Office, India.

There’s something about Freiburg that pulls you in. Maybe it’s the cobbled streets of its medieval old town, or perhaps it’s the way the city seems to hum with life while still feeling like a serene retreat. Nestled at the edge of the Black Forest, the eco-friendly city blends history, sustainability, and charm like no other. It is a city where cycling is king, farm-fresh markets are a morning ritual, and even a casual stroll reveals stories etched into its architecture.

In just 24 hours, Freiburg can offer you a taste of its soul: vibrant markets, indulgent food, an eco-conscious mindset, and, of course, those breathtaking views from Schlossberg at sunset. Whether you’re cycling along the Dreisam River, enjoying a meal at a restaurant that prides itself on locally sourced ingredients, or simply soaking up the fresh air, Freiburg shows that sustainability and beauty can truly go hand in hand.

Here’s how to spend one perfect day in Germany’s greenest gem.

Mornings in Freiburg

Stop 1: Visit The Local Sustainable Market—The Münstermarkt

It’s your first hour in the Green City and you might want to spend it doing what the locals do best—shop, eat and relax at the Münstermarkt (Cathedral Market). Its a vibrant farmer’s market and here you can spend some time browsing stalls brimming with fresh produce, regional specialities, and handmade crafts. Don’t miss the lange rote, a local grilled sausage served in a crusty bun—it’s a breakfast indulgence you won’t regret.

Another local favourite is the magnificent Münster Cathedral. Built between the 13th and 16th centuries, it features an awe-inspiring 116-meter spire that dominates the city skyline. For panoramic views of the city and the Black Forest, climb the tower—yes, it’s 333 steps, but the vistas are worth every breathless moment.

Local’s Tip : While exploring the cathedral, take a closer look at the gargoyles. The 91 individual figures are tasked with protecting the cathedral’s walls from too much rainwater. According to legend, the gargoyles are supposed to keep evil demons away from the church!

Stop 2: Explore the Altstadt (Old Town)

Freiburg’s Altstadt is a maze of cobblestone streets, quaint squares, and historic buildings. Walk through the picturesque narrow streets of Konviktstraße or Klein Venedig (Little Venice), where you will be greeted by mediaeval houses adorned with beautiful purple flowers. Make a stop at the 16th-century Historische Kaufhaus (Historical Merchants’ Hall) and admire its eye-catching dark red, intricately decorated facade. Keep an eye out for the Bächle, the shallow water channels that run through the streets. Legend has it that if you accidentally step into one, you’re destined to marry a local!

Stop 3: A Culinary Stroll Through Freiburg’s Old Town

After all that walking and exploring the old town, you might want to sit down for a good and hearty breakfast or brunch! For a quick meal, go to Restaurant Winzerstübchen (meaning “Little Vintner’s Room”) at Schwarzwälder Hof and try a variety of Portuguese finesse and Balden cuisine. To experience the finest wine culture in the city, make your way to the Alten Wache (House of Baden Wines). Relax with a glass of good Baden wine and enjoy the historical backdrop and view of the cathedral.

Local’s Tip : For a dessert stop, visit Stefans Käsekuchen (Stefan’s Cheesecakes), which is considered a Freiburg institution—a “must have” for all cake lovers.

Stroll through its streets and marvel at the colorful facades of its energy-efficient buildings. If you’re curious about sustainable architecture, you can join a guided tour and learn how Vauban became a global model for urban eco-living. Before leaving Vauban, stop by the Haus der Nachhaltigkeit, an educational center focused on sustainable living. Interactive exhibits offer insights into renewable energy, eco-friendly urban planning, and Freiburg’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint.

Stop 5 : Try the Regional Cuisine at Markthalle

In the Markthalle (Market Place), you can feast on a large selection of international dishes and regional delicacies. While you are there, try the Baden Brägele (roasted potatoes) or a Brazilian feijoada. To eat like the locals, consider dining at a homestyle restaurant and try the traditional cuisine of Freiburg—pancake soup, Maultäschle, and Knöpfle (spätzle). Beer fans will appreciate the Hausbrauerei Feierling brewery, situated very close to Augustinerplatz.

Local’s Tip : If you want to spend time outdoors, you can hike to the Black Forest. Start with a hike up Schauinsland Mountain, accessible via a solar-powered cable car. The Schauinsland Panorama Trail offers breathtaking views of the Rhine Valley and the Alps.

Eco-Friendly Evenings In The Green City

Stop 6: Sunbathing and Strolling Through Seepark (Lake Park)

The Seepark (Lake Park), with the 10-hectare Lake Flückigersee, is situated in the heart of Freiburg. There are expansive grassy areas for sunbathing, including a separate area for naturists. Its many attractions, such as pedal boats, a mini-golf course, a sunken pirate ship, restaurant, and kiosk, make the lake the perfect destination for a quiet and leisurely evening.

Highlights include a ride along the Dreisam River, a serene escape from urban life, and a climb to Schlossberg (Castle Mountain), where panoramic views reward your efforts. If you can, plan to reach the top around sunset—it’s the kind of moment that stays with you forever!
