A JOSTLING JUKEBOX: CAFÉ MONDEGAR, MUMBAI

Mondy has been around since 1932 as an Irani café. The present building aka the Metro House, back then was housed Apollo Hotel and the café was positioned at the reception area. In mid-20th century, the café familiarized a jukebox and was instantaneously transformed into a restaurant. By the 1990s, it was refurbished with murals painted on the walls and ceiling, and was renewed into a bar.

Owned by Yazdegardi family, Rusi and Hoshang Yazdegardi are the Managing partners of the business. The cafe is also well known for its murals. Covered in vast drawings, the walls of the café are striking and equally part of its charm. The café sits pretty in between a buzzing lane full of markets and stalls – adding onto its vintage beauty.

When it comes to food, the café reigns mostly Indian and Chinese treats. From pastas and prawns to chilled beers with refills and special others, Cafe Mondegar undoubtedly remains one of the best in its area.
