There’s no better way to immerse yourself in Germany’s tranquil countryside than by exploring on two wheels, covering every level of ability, from gentle family trails to white-knuckle mountain tracks and long-distance journeys. Wind your way through the Münsterland region and meander through green parks, meadows, and pastures, with more than a hundred castles and palaces along the way. Take the German Wine Route and cycle to the heart of the Palatinate (Pfalz), a region of vine-covered hillsides, rambling forests, picturesque hamlets, and exceptional wine estates. For a journey through southern vineyards, consider cycling the Buchen Hercules Trail in Baden-Württemberg. To experience nature at its best, take the Hessen Railway Cycle Route, which runs through the Hessian hills and nature parks against a backdrop of riverside meadows, beech forests, and panoramic views. Don’t forget to explore the Margrave Round in Bavaria, the Ruhland Trail in Hesse, and the Allgäu cycle loop.

Germany boasts an extensive network of captivating hiking trails and footpaths, offering diverse experiences. Follow the Castle Trail through the Bergstrasse region to combine lush vineyards with imposing historic castles. Alternatively, you can immerse yourself in the awe-inspiring beauty of the Danube Peaks Trail, a four-day trek featuring elevated paths that unveil breathtaking views of the winding river below. At night, rural areas are blessed with glittering skies that create wonderful possibilities for stargazing. You can visit Westhavelland, the first Dark Sky Reserve in Germany, to witness the Milky Way and a plethora of constellations. For a unique perspective of Germany’s oldest national park, the Bavarian Forest, you can traverse the “treetop paths.” The Bavarian Forest Treetop Path, extending 1300 metres through fir, beech, and spruce trees, offers a stunning aerial view. If you are looking for a coastal trail, the Baltic Sea Coast Hiking Trail (E9) from Lübeck to Ahlbeck combines shoreside charm with magnificent hiking routes. Pack your swim gear to take a dip at the numerous sandy beaches along the way. Don’t miss out on the Wadden Sea UNESCO World Heritage Site, the country’s biggest national park. It features a unique landscape and is home to a huge diversity of flora and fauna.

Berlin offers numerous green spaces, featuring vegan eateries and alternative events. A visit to the Reichstag Building is a must, especially to reserve a spot at the Norman Foster-designed dome for the most breath-taking view of the city. Recognised as the European Green Capital, Hamburg is committed to sustainable progress. While in Hamburg, make sure to explore the Miniature Wonderland and savour a meal at Buddels Restaurant, a charming, country-chic establishment emphasising local and seasonal ingredients, all against a memorable backdrop. The quaint village of Ramsau, home to the Berchtesgaden National Park, is one of the most sustainable holiday destinations. Near Ramsau lies the tranquil Lake Königssee, where electric barges transport you to the iconic St. Bartholomew’s Church pilgrimage site and the Wittelsbacher Hunting Chateau, all navigated by silent e-boats.

Cars are not allowed on the island, so biking is the way to go. What truly sets them apart is their mesmerising landscape of endless dunes and long, white sandy beaches. For a perfect day trip, visit Amrum in the North Frisian Islands, relishing the invigorating North Sea air, vast mudflats, and expansive beaches. Off Rügen’s west coast in the Baltic Sea, Hiddensee, known as ‘Söte Länneken,’ is a must visit experience with diverse natural landscapes and cultural hotspots, offering a delightful escape by foot, bike, or horseback.
