With the concept of zerowaste and providing chemical free, and vegan product, the Earthy Tones presents it skincare products.
Earthy Tones, creates handcrafted artisan soaps, butter and other products from scratch following the three principles of veganism, completely natural, and zero waste, which also form our core value system. Shilpa Hak founder brings in more insights about the products.
- Tell us about the beginning, the idea behind it?
Ans: Shilpa Hak became a vegan 6 years back and a zero waster 2 years ago. Since most of the skincare available in the market is loaded with chemicals and comes in a non-biodegradable packaging. She educated myself and started making my own skincare items. Soon friends and family started requesting for products and the idea was born. The name comes from my favourite colours brown and orange that are considered earthy tones
- Why did you decide to come up with something like Earthy Tones? And why the name?
Ans: The ideology is to provide affordable skincare that’s chemical free, vegan and zero waste. Also, the name Earthy tones because the concept is zero wastage and the it's eco-friendly so I wanted something that could represent the brands.
- What is the process like of sourcing and making the products at earthy Tones? Also, it is mentioned that your packaging is zero-waste, explain the process behind it.
Ans: I source either from suppliers that are reputed in the Indian handmade soap industry or I make powders myself to avoid adulteration. I buy the best quality ingredients that I can find even the lye, I use is pharma grade. Which is available with a great deal of difficulty. I pack either in recycled paper, cloth thrown away by local darzis or in glass I do not use plastic.
- What are the challenges you had to face or are facing when it comes to a start-up that is mostly product based?
Ans: Challenges are many e.g. lack of awareness in public about zero waste movement and veganism, eco-friendly packaging is expensive, and I don’t want to transfer that cost to consumer.
- What is the price range if you're comfortable with it and availability of the products?
Ans: Price range is 100-650
