Celebrating the Doyenne: Poonam Mittal

“For most of history, Anonymous was a woman.” ~ Virginia Woolf. On this International Women's Day, GlobalSpa recognizes and celebrates the women in the industry as we delve into their success mantra they follow, mistakes that have helped them grow, and of course, their WELLNESS philosophy.

Poonam Mittal is a designer who designs Modern-Indian wear endlessly inspired by nature, bringing craftsmanship to the forefront.

What is your wellness philosophy?

I am a very patient thinker. I believe taking your time with things and being mindful of your thoughts, words and actions is incredibly important in a fast-paced world like today where we are constantly bombarded with content, information and sensory data. Practicing thoughtful patience & mindfulness allow me to remain rational & sane with my work & life at large.

Your success mantra?

I think success is very different for everyone and it means different things to different people based on their life goals. So it is not a one size fits all mantra. Instead, what I would suggest is, whatever you want to achieve, be it fame, wealth, knowledge, recognition; SHOW UP. Keep at it. Show up for what you desire every single day, even when times are hard. Just showing up for whatever life throws at you is half the battle won.

A lesson you learned from making a mistake?

Many times because of the constant influx of content & trend reports from across the globe, it is very easy to be swayed in different directions. As a designer, it is crucial to develop an individualistic style, and it is a major challenge to scaling a brand. Therefore, a big learning from my mistakes in my early years was to not experiment just because you feel it is the need of the hour. Classic is classic for a reason and it is here to stay. So, stick to your style & carve a niche for your own self rather than pleasing every trend report.

Any piece of advice for all the women out there?

As women, we are often made to feel on the outside. Whether it is within your family or at work. It is important for women to stand their ground & hold their truth. I would advise all women to work, build a life for themselves & no matter at what scale or stage, and create financial value for themselves. The society we live in equates your worth to your work and work brings you a strong sense of self. Once you find that, you will be unstoppable.

What has been your biggest pride as a doyenne?

Like any other doyenne, it is just ensuring that whoever dons a Poonam Mittal ensemble feels special. They should be proud of themselves and they must feel like their best possible self when they carry the outfit. It's really all fashion & wardrobe is about. Expressing yourself as your best version.
