Add Bling to the Festivities by Styling your Vintage Ethnic Clothing

The possibilities are endless when it comes to a piece of clothing which can be recycled, handcrafted and transformed into something new. You might want to give a new life to your wardrobe but don’t want to spend money on more clothes?

The festive season is around the corner, and this year the enthusiasm is at the zenith. After approximately two years of tiptoeing around celebrations due to the fear of the spread of the virus, normalcy has returned. It also means the merry-making this year is at its prime. Apart from the gifts and making the celebration arrangements, having the right outfit for the festivities is equally essential. It could also translate into giving a makeover to your wardrobe. However, you need not indulge in extravagant festive shopping when you can simply amp up the old ones.

Among all the attires, vintage clothing never goes wrong. But for those who feel this is too old or outdated, there is always an option of customizing and styling the vintage clothes as per your wish. You can add a deep neckline or backline to your blouse, go for heavy embroidery, mirror or sequins work, play with colors, patterns and designs, and even add details to your attire.

Following are some handy tips by Albeena Abbas, Director Academics of AAFT Online that will help bring a festive vibe to your wardrobe and add a voguish touch to your traditional clothes. Give your old clothes a makeover with these ideas.

The six-yard variety

With approximately 30 traditional varieties of sarees available in our country, you can choose whichever print catches your fancy. And if you are the experimental kind, you can mix-match the fabrics for your blouse and saree. With a cotton saree having a small border, you can go for a fancy blouse in any fabric of your choice and give it a contemporary design such as lace, cape sleeves, shrug style, etc.

Saree with pantsuits

While styling your clothes, experimenting and innovating can never go out of style. You can style a saree over a pantsuit for a chic look and make it a 3-piece suit. You can also go for contrasting colours and drape the saree in a way that covers only one side of your outfit while the other offers a glimpse of the pantsuit. Furthermore, you can add a bustier crop top under the pants and dazzle up a plain saree.

Shrugs are the new in-thing

Passé are the days when a shrug was only worn with tank tops or over kurtas. Today, it is used as an add-on to enhance the look of the six-yard clothing and add a splash of fashion to your outfit. The look is also a practical style as you will have overall protection from the winter breeze. To ace a cape with a saree, use the color blocking technique – pick a saree in two vibrant colors and complete the look with a long-line shrug in a bright yet contrasting hue. The front open long-line shrug technique can be applied to lehengas and suits as well.

Suiting it up

Today, suits are not just a kurta with salwar and simple dupatta. You can jazz them for the festive season by making mindful choices of the colour combination or dupatta. You can go for banarasi, leheriya, bandhani, madhubani, or phulkari dupattas over a simple black and white suits, dark coloured chanderi suit with banarasi dupatta, and leheriya kurta with palazzos and chiffon dupatta.

For an Indo-Western look, you can always pair a crop top with dhoti pants. Maxi and floor-length dresses as suits. The new trend of maxi dresses giving the look of a floor-touching suit with a dupatta shouts fashion. And if you want the right balance of contemporary yet traditional look, then kamar bandh or anarkali style floor length dresses are definitely the go-to options.

To sum up

However, to take the fashion game a notch higher, styling your vintage outfit and even adopting the fusion look is never a bad idea.
