How your diet affects diabetes

Our diet plays a major role in deciding the fate of our health. This is how your diet can affect diabetes. Diabetes is greatly affected by the kind of food we consume. While some nutrients can help us prevent diabetes at the same time there are some nutrients which might lead us to the risk of becoming diabetic.  Heavily processed carbohydrates found in white flour, white sugar and white rice are easy to digest can cause spikes in blood sugar and insulin levels which can eventually lead to diabetes. Sweet and sugary beverages can also increase the risk of diabetes as they hold a lot of calories which lead to weight gain and obesity and can cause diabetes. Fried and packaged food consists of an alarmingly high level of unhealthy saturated and trans fats which cause the cholesterol level in blood to increase and this high cholesterol is considered to be a factor that causes diabetes. Processed meats like hot dogs hold high levels of sodium and nitrates which are considered unhealthy and can lead to type 2 diabetes.  Consumption of certain food items that help in controlling the levels of blood sugar and insulin might help in keeping diabetes under control. Fatty fish is considered to be one of the healthiest food items. Salmon, sardines, and herrings are a great source of omega-3 and fatty acids which benefits the health of heart. Green and leafy vegetables like spinach and lettuce are full of nutrition and hold a very few calories. They help in raising the blood sugar levels and help in avoiding diabetes. Regular consumption of eggs can also help in keeping the risk of heart diseases away since eggs are the best sources of lutein. Chia seeds are considered to be extremely beneficial for people with diabetes since they are extremely high in fiber yet low in digestible carbs. Consumption of nuts is also considered beneficial for people with diabetes since all nuts contain fibre and are low in digestible. Uncontrolled diabetes can lead to a number of diseases. However with right dietary habits and a healthy lifestyle, the risk of falling prey to diabetes can be avoided.
