How to Retain Your Skin’s Moisture in Winter

The presence of winter can be harsh to the skin, but with these tips you are covered. During winter, dryness of the skin is common because of low humidity level and air dryness. Dryness of the air causes fast evaporation of the water in your skin, and for this reason, it gets itchy, red, and in a worse situation, becomes flaky. Fortunately, many of the causes of skin dryness can be controlled for retaining the natural moisture of your skin. So, when winter blows, make your skin glow with the below tips.    USE HUMIDIFIERS   During winter, a common thing that people do that causes dry skin is indoor heating.  Although it is good for getting warmth, it dries the skin and mucous membrane. It also causes sore throat, dry lips and skin, and dry nose. Humidification of your house is advised to prevent the effects of indoor heating on the skin. This would replace the moisture that is being dried during indoor  heating and also hydrate the skin.    STAY HYDRATED    During winter, the thirst for water is low compared to summer. But just like summer, you lose water every day as the air dries your skin. And importantly, you need water to keep the cells healthy so ensure you take a lot of water during winter. Also, take tea, coffee, soup, and decaf but stay away from caffeinated fluids (they make you lose water). Using hydrating sheet masks are another way.   MOISTURISE YOUR SKIN FREQUENTLY   Moisturising the skin is another perfect way to prevent dry skin. After bathing, it is beneficial to apply body lotion. Preferably, you can use natural substances like honey, oil, and olive oil as they are perfect moisturising ointments that contain antioxidants which smoothen and soften skin.    HAVE WARM AND SHORT SHOWERS    Having a long bath during winter seems good, but it isn't; exposing the skin to dry air and water for long is wrong. So, it is recommended you have warm showers not longer than 10 minutes. Note, you can add coconut or olive oil to your bathwater for moisturising.    EAT THE RIGHT FOOD   Foods that contain healthy fat should be taken during winter. These types of food help in replenishing the natural fat of the body, which keeps your skin smooth. Fish, orange juice, soybeans, walnuts, and flaxseed are examples of foods to include in your diet.    Image Credits: freepik.com
