Seasonal Affective Disorder, a depression triggered by the change of seasons and commonly experienced in the winter, can also occur during monsoon. Dr. Anant Pandhare, Medical Director – Dr. Hedgewar Hospital, BAVP gives you 5 tips which will help you lighten up your mood.
From feeling exhausted and irritated to encountering altered moods, SAD syndrome affects people in many different ways. One may also witness symptoms such as oversleeping, a tendency to avoid light, loss of interest in usual activities, etc., leaving a drastic effect on their mental and physical well-being. The good part is that there are methods to treat this mood disorder that will help you sail through the challenging times.
Below mentioned are tips to fight monsoon blues, and lighten up your mood!
Connect with people
One of the most common symptoms of monsoon blues is the feeling of loneliness. During the rainy days, people often complain they feel lonesome which leads to social isolation and then, depression. It is recommended that you must go out and meet people who have a positive frame of mind. Surround yourself with friends and family, and do things that you love. Remember, every cloud has a silver lining.
Get yourself moving, exercise
Exercise has the potential to power up and rejuvenate your mental and physical health. It releases endorphins in the body which helps to uplift your subdued spirits. Work out for at least an hour daily, and have seven to eight hours of sleep per night. Try aerobics, cycling, and jogging; do whatever suits you. This will not only boost your immunity and strengthen your body but, keep the anxiety and stress under control.
Eat healthy foods
SAD can also affect the appetite of an individual. It can either make you under-or over-eat. And that sudden change in appetite often leads to weight loss or weight gain, including various health issues which can make the monsoon unpleasant. Keep yourself away from spicy, salty, and deep-fried foods. It will lead to indigestion, hyperacidity, and in some cases, even bloating. Instead, eat fresh green vegetables, add soup to your diet, and stay hydrated.
Give it a break
Rainy season might be the best time to catch up on all those TV shows, films, and books you have missed out on. Not only will they entertain you but keep you engaged and distract your mind away from negative thoughts. One can also start a home project or learn something new to fill up the extra hours at home and get a sense of fulfilment.
Break free
Do not restrict yourself indoors. Welcome the positive side of the monsoon season; embrace the rain, make plans, and visit nearby waterfalls. Let the cool monsoon breezes blow away the stress, anxiety, and all the negative thoughts from your mind.
If you notice signs of depression, take immediate action. Plan such activities during these few months of rain which will help in this case and not let you hunker down at home. But in case, if SAD symptoms persist or get worse, talk to your doctor and start the treatment.
