Before finding measures to escape the hideous suntan lines, let's understand what a Sun Tan is.
With summer being on the peak, your skin is at an exposed danger of getting a tan. And that makes it essential to know, clearly, what a Sun Tan is.
Sun imparts three types of ultraviolet rays which are UVA (Ultraviolet-A), UVB (Ultraviolet-B) and UVC (Ultraviolet-C). UVC is absorbed by the ozone layer and isn't able to reach the earth's surface. Both UVA & UVB, however, penetrate the atmosphere and damage our skin. Whenever our skin is exposed to the sun, both of these rays start attacking the skin and it tries to fight back by forming a Tan. This defence mechanism is based on a pigment called melanin, produced by our cells, which increases its production to absorb the ultraviolet light to shield cells from further damage, resulting in a darker colour of skin.

The longer you are out in the sun, the darker the shield gets. Prolonged exposure from the sun will result in Sun Burn. But sun damage isn't always visible. Under the skin's surface, UV light can affect the DNA. This overexposure to UV rays can cause skin cancer, the consequence of which is ageing of the skin quicker, forming of lines and wrinkles, the DNA of the skin mutates and the immune system gets weaker day by day.
In layman's term, Tanning is like a protective measure to fight back the dangerous UV rays by changing the colour of the skin and this change in colour is a sign of damage. But this severe damage takes a lot of time, and when you are out, just concentrate on preventing yourself from getting tanned.
