Tips for Your Healthy Mouth

Don’t let the festive season take away from your oral health. Follow these tips by Dr. Prerna Taneja, Medical Cosmetologist and Oral and Dental Specialist and put your best smile on! The oral cavity is actually very important as it reflects the health of your body and it also has 400 different kinds of microorganisms, especially bacteria, which help in a constructive way in the health of the body. To maintain your mouth you need to do more than just squeezing the toothpaste, changing brushing technique and eliminating soda from your routine. Brush twice a day This should be included in your daily routine as it is very essential for our mouth. This should be done at an interval of 12 hours. When we follow this, the plaque that gets deposited does not go to the mineralization stage and prevents the teeth from the damage. Interdental cleaning If you’re just brushing your teeth and not cleaning the in-between or interdental area with the help of floss or Waterpik, then you are not cleaning the 40 per cent of your tooth surface. Therefore cleaning this surface is also important. De-snacking: Snacking and sweet consumption by kids are not an issue but we need to remember its time of consumption. So, ensure that its consumption immediately after your food. Whenever we take food there is a pH change in the oral cavity and it changes to acidic and then it will be attacked by the bacteria. So to prevent any acid damage it’s advisable to take sweets immediately after food. Clean your tongue Cleaning your tongue is another most important step to maintain oral health. Do not scrap it rigorously; just gently use the cleanser to keep it clean as it harbours a lot of microorganisms and therefore rigorously cleansing is not advisable. The other things to keep in mind are eating raw food and vegetables, rinse your mouth after every meal and visit your dentist regularly.
