Whether you are a makeup junkie or a newbie, you probably already know that the most important part of your look is your foundation. A smooth and flawless foundation base is essential to achieving any makeup look, natural or full glam. With summer finally here, the heat and humidity makes it difficult for you to keep makeup from sliding off your face. The foundation and setting powder, paired with the oil and sweat on your face, can make you look like a hot mess. Kajol R. Paswwan, Celebrity Make-Up Artist ( MUA ) and Entrepreneur shares some essential steps to prevent your makeup from looking cakey!
1. Prep Your Skin
Start with clean, moisturised skin. Use a lightweight, hydrating primer suited to your skin type to create a smooth base. I prefer using gel moisturisers for summer, which are not so heavy-duty!
2. Less is More
Apply foundation sparingly and build coverage gradually where needed. Use a damp makeup sponge or brush to blend well and remove excess product.
3. Choose the Right Formula
Opt for a foundation formula that matches your skin type (e.g., matte for oily skin, hydrating for dry skin). Avoid heavy formulas if you have naturally clear skin.
4. Set with Powder Strategically
Use a finely-milled translucent powder to set makeup, focusing only on areas prone to shine or creasing (like the T-zone). Use a light hand to avoid over-powdering.
5. Avoid Over-Layering
Don't pile on layers of products. If using cream or liquid products, ensure they are fully absorbed and set before applying powder.
6. Blend, Blend, Blend
Blend your makeup well using tools like brushes, sponges, or even clean fingertips. This helps to seamlessly integrate products into your skin.
7. Use Setting Sprays Wisely
Finish with a setting spray to meld layers together and provide a natural finish. Hold the spray bottle at arm's length and mist lightly.
8. Regular Touch-Ups
Throughout the day, blot excess oil with blotting papers instead of adding more powder, which can lead to cakey buildup.
9. Choose Creamy Products
Opt for cream blushes and highlighters for a natural, dewy look that blends easily into the skin.
Also, it is important to understand your skin requirements and use techniques that come to you. If you have an oily T-zone, setting that area perfectly is essential. If you have dry undereyes, use a moisturising under eye cream while prepping the skin.
