Choosing between Body Butter & Body Lotion? Here’s what you should know

If you are someone who asks, “What difference does it make?” then Dr. Merin Liza Jacob, Director & Co-Founder of Green And Beige, is here to tell you that body butter and body lotion are significantly different and benefit our skin in different ways.

The days when skincare was viewed as something only the crème de la crème of society did are long gone. Today, skincare has become an essential part of our daily routine, as it should be. This shift, to a great extent, can be attributed to changing consumer mindsets. Beyond being mindful of what they put on their skin and what they give to the environment, present-day consumers are also well aware of essential skincare routines to keep skin glowing, soft, and supple; because who doesn’t love luminous skin?

Though a lot of us give utmost importance to our face care and are quite familiar with skin routines for the same, body care seems to take a backseat with the majority of the people. We tend to forget that our skin is our first line of defense and the skin on our body needs the same amount of care as the body. And if we regularly moisturize, we are often left confused, asking the all-important question – should we use a body butter or a body lotion? (Here they are confusing face care with skincare)

If you are someone who asks, “What difference does it make?”, then we are here to tell you that body butter and body lotion are significantly different and benefit our skin in different ways. Since everyone’s skin type varies, there is no ‘one size fits all option, and a body butter may be more beneficial than a body lotion for some and vice versa. This article is just to help you make the right choice for your skin.

What’s the difference?

First and foremost, it’s essential to understand the difference between body butter and body lotion. While both body butter and a body lotion will hydrate your skin and make it smooth, the primary difference is their texture – body butter has a denser, creamier texture as compared to a lotion. Body lotions, on the other hand, have a higher quantity of water, making them lighter and easy to absorb into the skin.

Moisturising 101: Choosing the right hydration for your skin

Body butter and body lotions are both great when it comes to replenishing your skin with adequate moisture and locking it in to avoid dryness. However, since body butter has a thicker texture and is made to seal in moisture for longer periods, it works wonders for people with dehydrated, itchy skin during the winters, as it intensely hydrates the skin. Often infused with ingredients such as Shea, Mango, or Cocoa butter, body butter is soothing and penetrates into the skin deeply to repair it and restore lost moisture. Body butter is the perfect choice for anyone looking for long-lasting moisturization

Body lotions are lighter than body butter but provide an equal amount of hydration to your skin. With a delicate feel, body lotions are ideal for everyday use but may be best suited for those with oily, normal, or slightly dry skin as they have a more runny, thin texture. Made with essential vegetable oils, body lotions are non-greasy and easy to apply at any time or place. (Often infused with quick-absorbing natural/vegetable oils and plenty of humectants, body lotions are non-greasy and easy to apply at any time or place) Applying them on your body after a shower with a special focus on typically dry areas such as elbows and knees will help lock in the moisture, nourishing the skin. A gentle massage ensures better absorption and a longer-lasting effect.

Summing up

Everybody’s skin is unique, and your skin type plays an instrumental role in finding the perfect moisturizing product for it. In a nutshell, body butter is perfect to be used for extremely dry skin and during colder months as they provide your skin with extra replenishment. Body butter can also work wonders when applied at night before hitting the bed to keep your skin from becoming dry and taut in the morning. But for everyday quick application, body lotions can be the ultimate choice.

Having said that, since both body butter and body lotions seep into the skin to do their job, it’s important to ensure you choose one that is void of harsh chemicals and will not damage your skin or the planet. For this reason, it’s best to opt for a product that advocates for the clean beauty philosophy. But whether it’s body butter or body lotion, it’s imperative to give your skin the right nourishment and gentle care for it to remain supple and youthful.
