Bollywood is stepping up in the fight against plastic pollution and promoting ocean health, marking a significant contribution to the global environmental movement. From participating in beach clean-up drives to endorsing eco-friendly products, actors are using their influential platforms to highlight the urgent need to clean up the oceans, raise awareness, advocate for sustainable practices, and support various initiatives to protect our oceans.

In honour of World Oceans Day, we spotlight some of the celebrities who double as ocean warriors…

1. Sonakshi Sinha

Heeramandi actor Sonakshi has always been a crusader in the Save the Ocean battle. Her immense love for water propelled her to become a certified scuba diver who carries her responsibility for working towards saving the sea sincerely. Experiencing marine life as a diver, she understands the need to save the blue against global warming and water pollution. Often, she spreads the word about ocean conservation through her social media, making a note that people understand how much plastic gets stuck underwater. She supports the fact that single-use plastic should be banned and people should be educated about it.

2. Parineeti Chopra

Parineeti Chopra has long been a passionate advocate for environmental care, particularly for the vast underwater world. Her love for the ocean led her to become a Master Scuba Diver, earning her the title of a true star of the sea. Parineeti emphasises that the breathtaking underwater scenery has changed alarmingly over the years, underscoring the urgent need to protect marine life. She is actively involved with an international diving organisation dedicated to removing garbage from the ocean. Her social media is also filled with stories of her participation in cleanup drives aimed at preserving India’s beautiful coastline.

3. Dia Mirza

Dia Mirza is widely known for her work towards sustainability and protecting the environment. She has been a part of various environmental campaigns across India. She has often reiterated her concerns over the constantly affected marine biodiversity. In 2023, she used her influential voice to narrate the documentary ‘Big Ocean States’. Taking some steps forward, Dia has also participated in seashore cleaning drives to spread the word that humans should take responsibility for the collapsing marine life to ensure future generations find themselves amidst a thriving environment.

4. Bhumi Pednekar

Bhumi is one of those actors in Bollywood who is following her duty to protect nature to make the world a better place. In 2019, the actor teamed up with Alfroz Shah, an activist, to talk about why beach conservation is needed. Bhumi is a socially conscious actor who has often made efforts to raise awareness of climate change and environmental protection. Her efforts were also recognised by the United Nations Development Programme, which named her India’s first National Advocate for Sustainable Development Goals, looking at her efforts to raise awareness on issues like climate change through her social media.

5. Alia Bhatt

Known among Bollywood’s best actors, Alia is also on her way to being a vocal advocate for the environment. Her initiative, “Coexist,” aims to establish the much-needed balance between mother nature and wildlife. The actor urges her fans to give up on single-use plastic bags that contaminate the beautiful ecosystem of aquatic life.
