The Standard, Huravalhi Maldives unveils a wall mural commission by the artist Rostarr, a long-time member of The Standard Family of artists and creatives.
Over the past two decades, The Standard has defined its properties and experiences with artistic collaborations with artists such as KAWS, Jose Parla, Erwin Wurm, Prune Noury, JR, Ivan Agote and Hank Willis Thomas to name a few. The Maldives commission re-invigorates the relationship with Rostarr which began in 2014 with a large-scale mural at Le Bain at The Standard, High Line. Rostarr, now based between Bali and Brooklyn, began his Maldivian journey with a live painting performance in Singapore at a celebration to launch The Standard, Huruvalhi Maldives in the island nation.

This time, Rostarr has painted the walls of the floating Standard Spa structure using his signature brush strokes. His abstract lines of blue and white against an orange backdrop appear to rise out of the water creating a striking moment in Huruvalhi. The lines themselves is a response to the surrounds and colours of the Maldives, from the bright sun to the sunset and its crystal-clear waters. Rostarr’s colour palette for this mural sees a return to colour, something that he has not done in over a decade, as he is known for its epic monotone murals and canvases. Moreover, this mural was the first time that he worked with a crew and local workers on the island where this exchange of knowledge to Rostarr was not only memorable a learning experience also for him but everyone involved.
The sun of Rostarr’s mural in the Maldives is inspired by the power of sun in nature, in some ways capturing the core values of The Standard Spa in the Maldives, and the coming together of different forces. This natural dialogue leads to a collaboration between The Standard Spa and Rostarr with a tote bag to be launched by the end of the year. A limited-edition t-shirt will follow and finally, specially designed hand block-printed sarongs, Hawaiian shirts and pajamas inspired by the mural will be launching early 2020.

Romon K. Yang aka Rostarr is a multidisciplinary artist working with painting, abstract calligraphy, large scale murals and experimental film. For over 20 years he has built an extensive repertoire of abstract polymorphic paintings, totemic iconographic characters and mostly black and white calligraphic works. Always creating in a spontaneous manner, he continually strives to find freedom within style, medium and form, whilst building upon the iconographic visual language he terms Graphysics, a word that exemplifies the geometric dynamism characteristic in his work.
