The rains, the cool breeze, and the earthy smell of wet mud – monsoon is a season many of us look forward to after the scorching summer heat. But while the weather feels refreshing, the season can be particularly challenging for the skin.

During monsoon, the skin often behaves unpredictably, fluctuating between oily and dry. Constant humidity, damp clothes, wet hair, and prolonged exposure to moisture can trigger a range of skin concerns, from acne and irritation to fungal infections and allergies. Many people also unknowingly make skincare mistakes during this season that can worsen these problems. Here are some common monsoon skincare mistakes to avoid:

Taking a Shower

After getting drenched in the rain, a shower may feel comforting. However, water can strip the skin of its natural oils, leaving it dry, irritated, and sensitive. Instead, opt for lukewarm water while bathing. It cleanses effectively without disturbing the skin barrier. Using a pH-balanced body wash can further help maintain the skin’s natural moisture levels.

Skipping Sunscreen

One of the biggest skincare myths during monsoon is that sunscreen is unnecessary because the sun is not visible. In reality, harmful UVA and UVB rays can easily penetrate cloud cover and continue to damage the skin. Skipping sunscreen during this season can lead to tanning, pigmentation, premature ageing, and long-term sun damage. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 and PA+++ every day, even on cloudy or rainy days.

Missing the Moisturiser

In monsoon, the skin tends to become oily and occluded with dead skin. Hence, people avoid applying moisturiser. However, oily skin does not necessarily mean hydrated skin. The weather fluctuates from high humidity levels to dry patches of weather. In fact, excess oiliness is often the skin's natural response to compensate for dry skin. Use a lightweight moisturiser appropriate for your skin type before applying the sunscreen and at bedtime. You can choose a gel formulation moisturiser to hydrate without the greasy feel.

Not Cleansing After Rain Exposure

Not washing your face immediately after getting wet in the rain is another big no-no in the monsoon. The rainwater contains harmful gases and toxins that can lead to major skin damage if not washed immediately. It can also lead to allergies and infections. If your skin comes in contact with rainwater, cleanse your face as soon as possible using a gentle face wash or cleanser. Follow it up with a moisturiser to restore hydration and protect the skin barrier.

A simple, consistent skincare routine can go a long way in keeping your skin healthy during monsoon. Paying attention to these small habits can help prevent seasonal skin issues and keep your skin balanced, hydrated, and protected throughout the rainy season.
