Osteoporosis, or in simple words, the condition of weak and fragile bones is very common in women. It makes your bone weak and prone to fractures, joint pain and stiffness in your body. Experts recommend weight-bearing exercises and strength training to keep your bones healthy. But, if you are someone, who feels an aversion towards exercise, thankfully, we have found alternate ways that don’t involve breaking a sweat in public, or long workout sessions- DANCING!
The National Osteoporosis Foundation cites dance as a high-impact, weight-bearing exercise that builds strong bones and improves bone density. Whether it's a viral hook step challenge, an artistic dance form, or a Bollywood sesh dancing is great for your bones and is enormous fun. It’s time to put on your dancing shoes and welcome healthy and strong bones!
What is osteoporosis?
Explained in simple terms, osteoporosis is a condition, in which your bones become brittle and weak. In some cases, they might turn so brittle that a fall or even mild bending over or twist can cause a fracture. Although, it can occur at any age, but postmenopausal women are at a higher risk.
How does dancing come into the picture?
Dancing is known to be osteogenic, which means that it has a high capacity to build bone mass and maintain the structure of the bones. When you dance, it involves steps that require you to run, jump, hop and move from foot to foot. These movements create additional pressure on your bones, which further stimulates your body to create more bones and improve their density.
Furthermore, you don’t have to be perfect while dancing, just put on your favourite music, sway to the beats and you’ll eventually be performing a great deal of exercises, without having to do much.
Dancing also works on your strength, flexibility, and balance which help your muscles work together in a way that keeps your weight in check and therefore strengthens the bones.
