Set amidst the natural landscape of Dagar Village near Narendranagar, the approach at MoShams has always been to live gently within the environment, rather than alter it to suit us.
Designed Around Nature
From the very beginning, MoShams chose to work with the existing terrain and vegetation of the site. The natural topography has been carefully preserved wherever possible, reducing unnecessary disturbance to the land. Approximately 50% of the site is retained as landscaped area, with native vegetation contributing to the green character of the property. The design incorporates ramps and carefully considered circulation, allowing the built environment to respond naturally to the contours of the land. Large floor-to-ceiling windows bring in abundant natural light and connect guests with the surrounding landscape, reducing the dependence on artificial lighting during the day while creating a strong sense of connection with nature.
Building Responsibly
There are consciously selected materials and systems with sustainability in mind, including GreenPro-certified materials wherever appropriate. From construction choices to everyday operations, the retreat continues to look at ways of reducing their environmental footprint without compromising the comfort and experience of their guests.
Harnessing Renewable Energy
MoShams incorporates solar power as part of the effort to reduce dependence on conventional sources of energy. They also focus on energy-efficient lighting and responsible energy consumption across the property. The pathways incorporate solar and motion-sensor lighting, helping them to provide safe and comfortable movement around the property while avoiding unnecessary energy consumption.
Responsible Water Management
Water is precious in the mountains, and responsible water management is therefore an important part of their operations. The property is equipped with a Sewage Treatment Plant (STP), allowing wastewater to be treated responsibly rather than discharged untreated into the surrounding environment. They continuously look for opportunities to reduce water consumption and reuse treated water wherever appropriate.
Giving Back to the Soil
Organic waste generated at MoShams is managed through vermicomposting, allowing biodegradable waste to return to the soil as useful compost rather than becoming part of the waste stream. This simple process reflects the larger philosophy—what comes from nature should, wherever possible, find its way back to nature.
Thoughtful Guest Amenities
The sustainability philosophy extends to even the smallest details of a guest's stay. Wherever possible, they have moved away from conventional plastic amenities and chosen eco-conscious, plant-based alternatives. The guest amenities, including toothbrushes and other personal-care accessories, are made from grass/wheat-straw-based materials rather than conventional plastic. These small but meaningful choices help us reduce the reliance on single-use plastics while ensuring guests continue to enjoy a comfortable and thoughtfully considered stay. MoShams believe sustainability is not only about large infrastructure or technology—it is also about making better everyday choices.
Protecting Our Green Surroundings
The Himalayan landscape around MoShams is one of the greatest assets, and protecting it is a responsibility they take seriously. They have retained endemic trees and have incorporated native trees and plants, green buffer zones, and large-leaf trees for natural shading as part of their landscape strategy. These not only enhance biodiversity and provide shade but also help the building respond more naturally to its environment. The approach is deliberately low-impact: fewer unnecessary interventions, more natural shade, better integration with the landscape, and respect for the existing ecosystem.
Sustainability Through Everyday Choices
Sustainability also lives in the small decisions made every day—responsible waste segregation, reducing unnecessary consumption, mindful use of electricity and water, reducing single-use plastics, encouraging reusable alternatives, and creating awareness among the team and guests. Sustainability is not about perfection. It is about making better choices, consistently.
