Inside ÀNI Sri Lanka: An Exclusive Private Estate Designed for Togetherness

Designed exclusively for one group at a time, ÀNI Sri Lanka is an oceanfront private estate where intuitive hospitality, personalised wellness and thoughtfully curated experiences make every guest feel like family.

I stepped off the plane at Colombo International Airport, braced for the usual gauntlet — the immigration queue, the crush at the baggage belt, and the scan for a driver holding up a sign with my name spelt wrong. None of that happened. Perhaps the first time in many months, there was absolutely nothing for me to do. While I relaxed in a private VIP lounge, my luggage had already been retrieved from the baggage belt and loaded into the vehicle. The very same vehicle was stocked with sunscreen, mosquito repellent, portable chargers, refreshments, snacks and soft chilled towels. The journey hadn't even begun, yet someone had already taken care of everything. If it sounds like peak luxury, that's because I'd checked into ÀNI Sri Lanka, an exclusive-use, private beachfront estate on the island's fabled south coast.

The drive from Colombo International Airport was a comfortable three hours, and by the time we rolled through the gates, I had ceased to feel like a guest checking into a resort and felt like I was stepping into someone's home. Little girls welcomed us with flowers and smiles, and the entire team stood waiting to receive us—not because protocol demanded it, but because ÀNI believes in welcoming guests the way locals welcome guests into their own homes.

Perched along the coastline, ÀNI Sri Lanka, feels wonderfully secluded. Designed exclusively for a single group of guests at one time, it can accommodate up to 30 guests across three different suite categories, with the ocean as your constant companion. You hear it while walking through the gardens, while sipping your morning coffee, while soaking in the bathtub, and even as you drift off to sleep. The architecture strikes a fine balance between contemporary luxury and authentic Sri Lankan craftsmanship: warm wood, natural textures, handpicked furniture, tropical landscaping, a rare collection of artefacts, and thoughtfully curated art; every corner is refined without ever tipping into excess. My room, when I finally saw it, sealed the experience—a beautiful bathtub, an outdoor shower, luxurious bath amenities, organic coconut and walnut scrubs, a freshly cut king coconut in place of the usual minibar, premium teas, and beautiful linens.

The team at ÀNI are among the most thoughtful people I've encountered. By the second day, they'd remembered how I liked my coffee. If I spent an afternoon by the pool, a fresh king coconut would appear before I'd even realised I wanted one. After a swim in the infinity pool, someone had already left bags for my wet clothes, and by the time I got back to my room, my cover-up had been hung to dry. The chefs remembered my food preferences without me having to repeat them. In four days, I never had to pick up the phone to ask for anything!

That same rhythm carried into the wellness side of my stay, which turned out to be far more than a spa menu. Rooted in the principles of Ayurveda, ÀNI's approach to wellness is integrated in every aspect of the resort. From the private yoga and Pilates, personalised fitness, and Ayurvedic dining—it all felt tailored to me specifically. Each afternoon, Spa Manager Manjula introduced us to a different therapy based on what our bodies needed rather than what was on offer. My reflexology session with him was unlike anything I'd experienced before; simply by working on pressure points, he was able to identify exactly where I was carrying tension. One afternoon brought a traditional Ayurvedic lunch where every dish, including the organic wine, was explained not just for its flavour but also for its role in balancing the body.

But what stayed with me most wasn't any single treatment. It was the feeling of tailored wellness becoming the rhythm of the day rather than something scheduled between activities. That feeling followed me onto a sunset boat cruise through the mangroves one evening, wine and canapés in hand, as another small boat drifted silently behind us carrying a young boy playing the flute, his melodies carrying across the water as the sun slipped below the horizon.

The days beyond the resort gates were just as carefully looked after. One morning, a vintage car carried me through quiet villages to a Buddhist temple. Another afternoon unfolded over freshly brewed cinnamon tea in a countryside home, learning how Ceylon cinnamon travels from bark to beautifully rolled quills. And one of the true highlights of the stay was visiting the ÀNI Art Academies, watching young artists create breathtakingly realistic portraits – made more meaningful once I learnt their education is fully funded by the ÀNI Art Academies Foundation. For guests wanting more adventure, ÀNI also arranges private surfing lessons, catamaran cruises along the coast with the chance to spot blue whales and dolphins, deep-sea fishing, scuba diving, or a safari through Udawalawe National Park, where elephants roam freely in their natural habitat.

Meals here were exceptional in their own right. One night, a tuk-tuk became a cocktail bar. Another time, we dined under the stars, surrounded by lotus arrangements and softly glowing lanterns, feasting on authentic Sri Lankan delicacies that instantly became favourites—slow-cooked mutton curry, mugunuwenna mellum made with a local herb, and chicken kottu roti, followed by a Sri Lankan love cake and naran kewum, a traditional local dessert I absolutely destroyed. On yet another, dinner gave way to an outdoor cinema—oversized daybeds, cosy blankets, fresh popcorn, and sparkling wine beneath a sky full of stars. Our final night, though, was something else entirely. Traditional Sri Lankan cultural performances balanced with modern and Bollywood influences, followed by an authentic Indian dinner set beneath a magnificent tree glowing with woven lanterns – it all felt straight out of a dream.

Three days later, I left with beautiful photographs, a suitcase full of thoughtful keepsakes and a phone full of sunsets. But strangely, those aren't what I remember most. I remember names. I remember long conversations around dinner tables. I remember falling asleep to the sound of waves and waking up without an alarm. Most of all, I remember how an entire team managed to make one guest feel like family.
