Experience the Taste of Philadelphia at Reading Terminal Market

Travelling to Philadelphia but got only a few hours to spare? Head over to the Reading Terminal Market - a remarkable landmark loved for its vintage aura and its varied delights both for the eye and soul.

Since 1893, The Reading Terminal has served as a public market even after its namesake railroad ceased operation. Here you’ll find grandmothers picking out their weekly produce, office workers taking a lunch break, suburbanites ordering holiday specialties as well as conventioneers from the building’s renovated head house and train shed. You could say, it’s a microcosm of the people, the history, and flavors of the unique city of Philadelphia.

BE SURE TO COME HUNGRY!

As you wind your way around the more than 80 stalls and push carts, you’ll be tempted by local chocolates at the PENNSYLVANIA GENERAL STORE , ethnic delights from around the globe, and local produce. You can settle the great sandwich debate of Philadelphia - cheese steak or roast pork - get one of each, grab a table in the main court and discover your personal favorite. Cheese lovers will delight in the many local as well imported options. The DUTCH EATING PLACE counter offers a big breakfast complete with scrapple (a regional dish made of cornmeal and pork scraps), year round turkey dinner with the trimmings and a plump apple dumpling served with a pitcher of heavy cream.

SUGAR RUSH HOUR

When in town, Celebrity Chef Eric Ripert has been known to make Miller’s Twist soft pretzels (made right before your eyes) his first shopping stop. BEILER’S baked goods is a place to satisfy your sweet tooth (be prepared for a long donut line) or bring some treats back home from the bakery.

A MUST VISIT: BASSETTS ICE CREAM

A definite recommendation is diving into some ice cream at Bassetts. It’s the first merchant to sign a lease in 1892 and remains owned and operated by the original family. From a taste of old Philadelphia vanilla ice cream to a modern twist of matcha green tea, you’ll want to linger at the well-worn original marble counter.

Bassetts At Home Special: The Pistachio Chai Milkshake with Cinnamon

Ingredients:

  1. 12 oz. of Bassetts Vanilla Ice Cream
  2. 5 oz. Whole Milk
  3. Chai Tea Leaf (enough to fill a standard tea bag)
  4. Orange Blossom Honey
  5. ½ cup Finely Chopped Roasted Salted Pistachios
  6. Whipped Cream
  7. 2 teaspoons Cinnamon

Directions:

  1. Put Chai Tea Leaf in a teabag or brewing method of choice.
  2. Heat roughly 5 oz. of milk in a saucepan with the teabag submerged in the milk.
  3. Stir milk to avoid burning and to help with the steeping process.
  4. Cook on low for ~15 mins or until the tea has flavored the MILK. Set milk tea aside to cool.
  5. Once the milk tea has cooled, scoop Bassetts Vanilla ice cream into a blender. Three large scoops should work. Roughly 12 oz.
  6. Pour cooled milk tea into the blender with the ice cream. You want a 3:1 proportion, so 3-parts ice cream to 1-part milk tea.
  7. Blend until smooth and all ice cream chunks have been broken down.
  8. While milkshake is in blender, pour honey onto a small plate to prepare your serving glass.
  9. Dip the rim of your serving glass in some honey.
  10. Dip the honey’d rim of the serving glass in the finely chopped pistachios.
  11. Pour the milkshake into the serving glass.
  12. Top with whipped cream.
  13. Shake some cinnamon over top for garnish.
  14. Enjoy!
No matter how many times you visit The Terminal, there’s always something new to add to your must-have favorites.
