Cross-Country Skiing: Cross-country skiing here dates back to the mid-1850s when famed skier Snowshoe Thompson carried mail across the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Over 160 years later, cross-country skiing still thrives in Lake Tahoe. North of South Lake Tahoe’s “Y” intersection of Highway 50/89, on the lakeside, you will find mostly flat and short trails at Pope, Kiva, and Baldwin Beaches, as well as at the nearby Tallac Historic Site and Taylor Creek Visitor Area. Camp Richardson offers groomed trails once the snowpack reaches two feet among many other sports across the area.

Snowmobile Adventures: Lake Tahoe’s sheets of snow offer the perfect grounds to try snowmobiles. Take a guided tour from Zephyr Cove to cruise through the peaking mountains. This snowmobile tour offers stunning views of the lake and the Carson Valley. There are many other options to try snowmobiles in Hope Valley and other accessible tracks.

No spot is as picturesque for ice skating in Lake Tahoe as Heavenly Village with holiday lights strung all around and music playing. Edgewood on Ice is another awe-inspiring ice-skating spot offering winter-inspired fare to cocktails in the backdrop of alpine views. Located off Highway 50, South Lake Tahoe Ice Arena is another family-friendly spot where you can enjoy snow with your loved ones.

Tree Trivia Snowshoe Trek: The Sugar Pine Foundation (SPF) and the Tahoe Rim Trail Association (TRTA) have teamed up for a morning of educational and fun snowshoeing along the Tahoe Rim Trail to the iconic Castle Rock and loop back to the Kingsbury North Trailhead on February 12. Usually a moderate, leisure snowshoe trek, it could be more challenging if snow levels are deep. Along the way, experts at the Sugar Pine Foundation will reveal the mysterious world of trees including a discussion of the fate of Lake Tahoe’s favourite woody perennial, the magnificent Sugar Pine, and what individuals are doing to help the species persevere for future generations.
