Yuvraj Singh: Cancer Survivor and his glorious Journey

YUVI

Here is a legacy of Yuvraj Singh, his strokes which the Team Indian will never forget.

With 8,701 runs and 111 wickets in ODIs and 1,177 runs and 28 wickets in T20Is, Yuvraj Singh is the all-rounder for the Indian Team. Yuvraj also known as Yuvi was one of the left-handed batsmen in the middle order and bowls slow left-arm orthodox.

His career started at the Punjab Under-16s in November of the 1995–96 season against Jammu and Kashmir. He was only one-month shy of 14. In 1996–97, he was promoted to Punjab Under-19s and scored 137 not out against Himachal Pradesh Under-19s.

His first-class debut was at the 1997–98 Ranji but was dismissed for a duck opening the innings. His first breakout performance happened in 1999 in the Under-19 Cooch Behar Trophy Final. With Bihar all out with a score of 357, Yuvraj batted at three for Punjab and made 358 runs all by himself.

In the 2000 Under-19 Cricket World Cup, the cherry on top of India’s wn was Yuvraj’s Player of the Tournament award. This was followed by a call-up to the national squad.

He was a member of the Indian ODI team between 2000 and 2017 and was the Vice-Captain between 2007–2008. One of his famous feats occurred during a World T20 fixture in South Africa in 2007, where he hit England’s Stuart Broad for six sixes.

In the World Cup in 2011 where he scored no less than 362 runs, scalped 15 wickets and was adjudged the Man of the tournament. A few months after that World Cup, Yuvraj was diagnosed with lung cancer, but after extensive treatment, was discharged in March 2012. He made his international comeback in the following September Twenty20 match shortly before the 2012 World Twenty20.

In the same year, he was conferred with the Arjuna Award, and in 2014, the Padma Shri. He is also the most expensive player ever auctioned at the IPL: in 2014 the Royal Challengers Bangalore bought him for a record-breaking price of 14 crore and in 2015, the Delhi Daredevils bought him for an even higher 16 crore.

Yuvraj announced his retirement from cricket on 10 June. A holder of not one but two ICC titles, he’ll still be seen playing T20 and otherwise helping cancer patients at YouWeCan.
