The new Audi Q5 has taken the market by storm – thanks to its good looks and strong performance. By Ranojoy Mukerji
A lot of manufacturers withdrew their model line-ups when BS6 came into play, including some best-selling models from all manufacturers. The extremely popular Audi Q5, which was one of the brand’s mainstays in India, was also withdrawn from the line-up for the same reason. However, fast forward to November 2021 and the good news is that the Q5 is now back in a new avatar, and a strong line-up of a gasoline powertrain.
Those who miss diesels will find out just how torquey and creamy this petrol motor is. With Quattro all-wheel drive and that lovely DSG dual-clutch transmission, driving pleasure has reached a new high here. The timing of the Q5’s re-entry is perfect because India is on a SUV high, and everyone is now buying one – right from the lower segments to the super premium. But before we get carried away, let’s take a look at the goodies the new Q5 is offering.
Let’s examine the exterior first. To the keen-eyed observer, the subtle differences with the previous model are evident. The LED headlamps are where the difference is immediately noticeable, and there also is a new octagonal front grille with brushed metal. The rear has a new tail lamp design with a metallic strip, as well as new bumpers, and the wheels have been upgraded from 18 to 19 inches.
Inside, the overall design language remains the same, though you get a new user interface that is now available with the A4 and S5, and other newer models. The 10.1-inch touchscreen is now easier to operate and handles inputs quite well. There are a myriad of ways you can customize the Q5 to your individual tastes. Audi’s patented MMI system now handles Apple CarPlay and AndroidAuto quite well. The main display also works in conjunction with the cameras in the car. It is accompanied by an amazing B&O sound system with 19 speakers on the top model, which literally makes a concert house come alive in your car!
Of course, wireless charging is part of the top ‘Technology’ pack. The dashboard display is also sleeker than before and features a full digital cockpit where you can get any kind of display. The best part is that the controls for the air-con are via buttons and knobs rather than a touchscreen, so changing settings on the go is a lot easier!
In terms of trim, the large panoramic sunroof makes the cabin airy and visually larger, which is intrinsically the selling point of all cars in the luxury category today. You also get plenty of room inside with a fairly large wheelbase of 2819mm. This means even backbenchers get comfy legroom and there is plenty of headroom and shoulder room as well. The design ensures safety too, with 8 airbags as standard. Of course, you get an electronic stability programme, hill hold assist, and a host of other electronic aids to keep you and your loved ones safe.
Although many would remember the Q5 for its refined diesels, the new petrol is an impressive powerhouse. The diesels are gone now and the new petrol unit is butter smooth with a creamy torque delivery. It is silent and the noise and vibration levels are impressive. The 2.0-litre unit, christened as the 45 TFSi, makes 249 horses and a rather impressive 370 Nm of torque, delivered via a 7-speed dual clutch auto tranny. This, combined with Audi’s patented “Quattro'' all-wheel drive system, gives impressive results both on and off road. The bigger 19-inch wheels now give a more planted experience, and the larger wheels have not compromised the ride quality, thus providing the same confidence that was derived from the 18-inch wheels. Potholes are ironed out superbly while the impressive ground clearance makes sure that you are never caught out bottoming anywhere. The new 45TFSi has the go to match the show and the punchy mid-range lets you ride a wave of torque, which gives you excellent overtaking ability and a relaxed highway speed cruising range.
The Q5 is a worthy successor to its previous avatar. Now upgraded with many new features, it surely keeps the crown within its segment and offers features that few rivals can muster. Add to that a dynamic driving ability and keen performance, and there is no doubt that we have a winner here. Another great aspect of the Q5 is its pricing. There are two variants available – the Premium Plus at INR 58.93 lac and the Technology version at INR 63.7 lac, ex-showroom. Both models are fully loaded to the gills, with very few differences, but the higher model is also worth every penny. Audi has already seen an overwhelming response to its Q5, and I would suggest that you quickly book yours to avoid disappointment. The new Q5 is a stonker in every sense of the term and I personally feel that it is the best vehicle in its segment.
It may seem like a bit of an underdog, but if you want a solid reliable performer that goes as well as it looks, the new Q5 is your best bet.
