Priyanka Kheruka, Brand Head – Borosil Ltd, tells you how to make your kitchen an eco-friendly, sustainable and multi-functional place that goes beyond cooking.
Playing your part in conserving the environment can start right from your kitchen. Making your kitchen sustainable has gradually gained importance, especially during the time of an ongoing pandemic. The role of a kitchen space has now modified itself from just a cooking space to a place of entertainment and work too, making it a multifunctional, modern lifestyle approach. There are always newer, improved ways for redefining your kitchen to eco- friendly and sustainable standards while keeping up with the aesthetics. Incorporating these changes will allow the environment to benefit from our move towards a greener future as well. Here are a few ways in which you can modify your own kitchen and take steps to cleaner living.
? Say no to plastic
We use plastics almost everyday for our various needs which becomes increasingly harmful in the long run. A better alternative to plastic is the use of non- toxic materials like glass or even steel for storing food, for kitchen utensils and cutlery, too. By adopting this change, the food we consume will be saved from the poisonous chemicals of plastic that can seep into our food while heating or after storing for long periods of time. At Borosil, we have adapted to the growing demands and manufacture glass kitchenware for the health and safety of your body and environment. Using cloth bags for shopping is a better option than plastic bags, which take years to decompose and pollute the environment on a daily basis.
? Choose and use the right kitchen appliances
We must be conscious about using appliances that efficiently use energy and do not waste it further. Induction cooktops use less than half the energy of regular coil elements and cook your food just the same. Dishwashers, kettles and even pressure cookers use the right amount of energy that is required and are useful ways in making your kitchen eco- friendly.
? Opt for greener cleaning agents
The cleaning products we use to tidy up our kitchen and wash our utensils are formulated with toxic chemicals that are proven to clean dirt of any kind. However, the very ingredients we use in everyday cooking serve as natural, harmless cleaning agents that also get the job done, at a much lower cost. Lemons, baking soda, vinegar, salt and more are a few of the ingredients we can use in place of dishwashing soap.
? Grow some plants for your cooking space
Plants in the kitchen help with purifying the air, by converting carbon dioxide into oxygen and can even reduce air pollutants like formaldehyde. Not only do they increase the aesthetics of your kitchen, but they also promote a green environment to cook in, overall.
? Think about composting
Composting has for long been a healthy practice of giving back to the earth. Instead of throwing out unwanted parts of vegetables, fruit peels and eggshells, we can compile them in a composting bin ourselves which helps in reducing the amount of waste that gets stored in landfills which directly equates to the release of methane, a harmful greenhouse gas. The soil also gets enriched as moisture levels come up and avoids the need for chemical fertilizers.
