Hijama cupping is a deep muscle relaxation method invented in Egypt.
Recently, I was in tremendous pain after an intense session of solo paragliding. My back had turned stiff and I got a scoliosis attack. To relax my back, the physiotherapist suggested Hijama cupping.
Hijama cupping is a deep muscle relaxation method which was invented in Egypt and Macedonia over 5500 years ago. Most of the women from the Royal family would engage in cupping to boost the flow of blood across their body. Moreover, after child birth, women would engage in cupping to relax their muscles.
The process of Hijama cupping is fairly easy. It involves using medically graded cups on the body and creating a vacuum in the cup using a suction pump. Post that the cup is either left on the skin or moved around to boost blood flow.
While I did the cupping, I personally experienced benefits of deep relaxation, immune support, stress reduction and also reduction in my back swelling. After 5 sessions, I was okay and could move like before my scoliosis attack.
While the hijama cupping left me back with some marks due to the tension in the cups, I healed after 3 days from the cup bruises. More importantly, I felt mentally free and rejuvenated.
While most wellness properties globally are now into dry hijama cupping, there’s also a wet hijama cupping therapy which is available in some places where the therapist draws some external lesions on the skin to boost blood circulation. Personally, after I tried the wet hijama cupping, I felt dizzy and strained. I also remember not being able to bathe for 24 hours after the session since the lesion wounds could worsen and the body needed rest.
In comparison, the dry hijama cupping sessions were much more relaxing and left me feeling fresh. Besides global wellness properties, I have also seen a rise in cupping therapy at local ayurveda centers and holistic healing institutions in India. Cupping is certainly a modality which can allow people to feel fresher and ease pain. I see how there has been a rise in cupping in India. At one point, acupuncture was new and people adopted it. I believe, now cupping is new but soon it will be spoken about in every household.
