You must think that Chapped lips and cheeks are something that only happens in the winter. The cold, dry weather, lack of water intake, sun damage, food habits, vitamin deficiency, using products that aren’t suiting your skin or frequently licking your lips can make your lips dry and chapped. But unless you take special care, your skin can get dry, sore any time of year.
Lips don’t have oil glands so it’s very difficult to retain moisture. The absence of oil glands means that your lips do not produce natural moisturizing factors or elements that keep your skin's outer layer protected and hydrated. Karishma M Sanghi, Founder of Forest Trove, Natural Botanical and Fruit Based Beauty Brand gives her insights on how to take care of your lips and deal with dry lip & cheek problems.
Your lips are naturally more sensitive than the rest of your skin. To have soft, supple lips all year round do the following. Start with exfoliating your lips – when your lips are dry the skin starts flaking. Gentle exfoliation helps to remove the dead cells helping to moisturize the new skin under the flaky areas. Once the exfoliation is complete you could use coconut oil, shea butter, honey, petroleum jelly, avocado butter to moisturize your lips. Most of these products have anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties which give a soothing effect to the lips and cheeks. Let’s read the dos and don’ts with regards to lip care.
1.) Drink plenty of water: drinking enough water and staying hydrated throughout the day will help prevent your lips from drying out.
2.) Using a humidifier: this helps to introduce moisture in the air and prevents your lips / cheeks from drying out.
3.) Try using home remedies such as ghee which will give you the much needed lubrication.
4.) Exfoliating the lips from time to time – this is essential to remove the dead skin.
5.) Stop licking your lips a bunch – it’s natural to wet the lips by licking them but this worsens the problem. /as saliva evaporates the lips get drier.
6.) Investing in the right lip balm – try out Forest Trove lip and cheek tint balm made from natural fruit extracts. Macadamia Nut & Almond – Sani: using the goodness of Macadamia Nut & sweet almond, shea butter this nutty flavored tint balm is simply amazing. Orange & Tangerine –Samar: with the freshness of oranges and tangerines, sunflower oil this light fruit fragranced tint balm is to die for. These can be used all year round. Apply the lip tint balm as and when needed, at night suggest using a thick lip moisturizer before hitting the sack. This is especially important for mouth breathers or people who sleep with their mouth open. The passage of the air will dry out the lips; we lose a lot of moisture when we sleep.
Products to avoid – when choosing a lip balm try to avoid products with a lot of fragrances, flavors such as mint and cinnamon. Menthol will actually dry out your lips even more. Shiny glosses can intensify damage from the sun rays and prevent using colors that can cause irritation. Staying hydrated and applying a lip balm should be a routine incorporated into your everyday lifestyle for healthy, protected and moisturized lips.
