Skin Deep: Is the Future of Skincare Gender Neutral?

Skincare is all about self-love and taking care of yourself, and nobody should be left out. Nehaa Juneja, founder of SKINWORKS talks about the evolution in bringing gender neutrality in beauty.

Gender is just a social concept, but from a very early age, we've been conditioned to classify certain colors and products as "Feminine" or "Masculine". As we grow up, it's the marketing strategies of established brands whose financial focus is on sustaining their sales growth. It remains in their interest to bring new niche products tailored to as many separate segments as possible.

Regardless of gender, we all wash our faces. Pigmentation, aging, and blemishes are top concerns for all genders. It's high time we start choosing products based on their ingredients and ignore the aroma or 'key' ingredient for gender effect (like coffee and charcoal in some men's products).

Thankfully, with a lot of Clean beauty brands available in the market, we're being spoiled for choice when it comes to skincare with an emphasis on skin type and areas of concern, rather than gender. We have a lot of skin-care brands using advertising that reflects diversity in race and gender, and packaging products in ways to avoid norms. Male lifestyle influencers like Ankush Bahuguna, and Siddharth Batra, are breaking stereotypes about how it is perfectly normal for men to take care of themselves or even apply makeup. The traditional genera of gender are blurring, if not entirely vanishing.
