There are two product formats you need to get acquainted with- Antiperspirants and Deodorants. Learn the difference between these two from the experts of Plum.
With summers almost here, let’s talk about stinky armpits, shall we?
Know that nasty whiff of stinky armpits that makes your nose scrunch up? (You cringed just at the thought of it, didn’t you?) Body odor causes uncomfortable situations, whether when you’re out for brunch with the girls on a hot summer day, sitting for an interview, chilling on a dinner date or hitting the gym! Let’s be real, we’ve all been there. And in case you believed the hype, sweating doesn’t contribute much to that unpleasant underarm smell.
#FactsFirst: Sweat is 99% water, 1% body toxins.
Sweating is normal. As normal as singing in the shower—everybody does it. Sweating is cool—quite literally—it’s how your body cools down & detoxifies! When your body temperature rises, sweating helps keep your body at an optimum temperature. It is a bodily function that you shouldn't fret over, because it is NOT sweat that actually smells. Yup, sweat is odorless; it is the bacteria that are hangin’ out in your underarms which interact with sweat to release stinkies. And that’s what body odor is.
Armpits are also not as exposed to sunlight and air, as your other body parts are, making it an ideal condition to invite smelly bacteria.
Now let’s discuss the commonly seen products claiming to address the stinky pits issue.
There are two product formats you need to get acquainted with i.e. Antiperspirants and Deodorants. Typically, these 2 terms are used interchangeably but that’s not necessarily right. Because you see, an antiperspirant can be called a deodorant because it do-odorises your skin but every deodorant is NOT an antiperspirant.
A deodorant with aluminium and baking soda in it is an anti-perspirant and a deodorant without these 2 ingredients is simply a… deodorant.
Antiperspirants i.e. Deodorants with aluminium & baking soda | Deodorants without Aluminium & Baking Soda |
---|---|
As the name suggests, these stop you from perspiring. The aluminium present in them blocks sweat glands so you don't sweat as much, as a result of which your body can overheat. Conventional antiperspirants usually also contain baking soda (sodium bicarbonate), the infamous skin irritant that reduces odor, but tends to leave a white residue, leading to toxic build-up. | Aluminium-free underarm deodorants, like Plum BodyLovin’s de-odorizing pit creams, de-odor-ize your armpits by eliminating odor, instead of masking it or blocking sweat. Their mechanism is designed to get rid of underarm smell by neutralizing the bacteria that feast on your sweat! Aluminium and baking soda being off the ingredient list lets your body sweat naturally, not clogging pores or giving you dark/ itchy underarms. Another plus? No toxic build-up. |
So, go ahead and sweat it out with aluminium-free deodorants this summer! :)
