Prepping your skin for Holi requires more than a generous coat of oil. Here’s how to layer your skincare the right way for healthy, happy skin during the festival of colours.

Holi is almost here — which means two things are guaranteed: your white clothes won’t stay white, and someone will insist that “just apply oil” is the ultimate skincare hack. While the festival of colours is all about carefree fun, your skin deserves a little more strategy than a last-minute oil slick.
Oil is commonly applied before Holi because it creates a protective layer on the skin. Since many Holi colours are water-based, oil forms a barrier that helps prevent pigments from settling deep into the skin. This reduces staining and makes cleansing easier later. Its slippery texture also allows colour to glide off instead of sticking. It also helps maintain the skin’s natural moisture balance.
However, oil alone is not enough. For many women oils can clog pores and lead to blackheads, whiteheads, or acne due to sweat, sun exposure, and heavy chemical-based colours. Those with oily or acne-prone skin should be more cautious. Applying a thick layer of oil on dry, unprepared skin may trap colour and impurities, increasing the chances of breakouts after the celebration.
The focus should be on proper layering. Well-hydrated skin is more resilient and less likely to absorb colour. When skin is dry or dehydrated, it becomes more vulnerable to staining. Begin preparation the night before with a nourishing moisturiser to strengthen the skin barrier. On Holi morning, apply a lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturiser at least 30 minutes before going outdoors. Once absorbed, layer a thin coat of a light oil such as coconut oil to create a physical shield. Complete the routine with a sunscreen, and reapply if spending extended time in the sun.
Many Avon women follow this simple, balanced approach of moisturiser first, oil next, and sunscreen last. It protects the skin without overwhelming it.
In the days leading up to Holi, Avon Anew toners help balance and prep the skin. Anew Renewal Power Cream supports the moisture barrier, while a gentle Vitamin C dermabrasion smooths and brightens the surface, leaving skin healthier and better prepared for the festivities.
